Refusing the Heavenly Invitation

Yoga Sutras 3.51

Meaning · English

When beings of the higher realms extend an invitation, the yogi neither clings to it nor feels proud of it, because attachment to what binds could rise again.

Three words carry the sutra. Sthani means one who holds a place, a being of a higher realm. Upanimantrana means an invitation, a courteous summons to come and enjoy. Sanga is clinging, a sticking to something. Smaya is a quiet swelling of pride, the thought that one has been chosen. Akarana means not doing: neither is to be produced. Punar-anishta-prasanga means that the unwanted returns, a falling back into harm. So the sutra says this. When a high being offers the yogi a place among the pleasures of its realm, the yogi does not cling to the offer and does not take pride in it. The reason given is that doing either lets bondage grow back. Patanjali says it because the powers and subtle attainments in this chapter can flatter the one who reaches them. Flattery feeds the very habits the practice is meant to wear away. The next sutra, 3.50, speaks of destroying the seeds of bondage, and this sutra guards against replanting them. Vyasa's Bhashya, as the commentators take it, sorts such beings into kinds by the level a yogi has reached, and reads the warning as: do not be pleased and do not think yourself accomplished. The commentators agree on the warning and differ mainly in how they classify the visitors.

A person who has quit sweets walks past a bakery and a friendly baker waves them in with a free sample. Taking the sample feels harmless, and feeling pleased at being singled out is just as much a hook. The baker is the invitation, and the old craving is the attachment that wakes.

1. Once today, notice a small invitation: a compliment, a favour offered, a chance to be admired. 2. Before answering, pause for three slow breaths and look for two things: a pull toward it, and a small glow of pride. 3. Name each quietly to yourself, "pull" or "pride", and answer plainly anyway. 4. At night, spend a minute recalling which of the two was stronger. Only observe; no scoring.
