Knowing Through Moments

Meaning · English
By samyama on the moment and on the order in which moments follow one another, there arises knowledge born of discernment.
Three words carry this sutra. Kshana is a moment, the smallest bit of time, one that cannot be split further. Krama is succession, the way one moment follows the next in a fixed order. Viveka is discernment, the power of telling one thing clearly from another. Samyama is the three inner steps of holding, steadiness and absorption practised together on a single object. The plain sense: when samyama is held on the single moment and on the line of moments that follows it, a knowing arises that is born of discernment. Patanjali says it comes from viveka, not from effort at gathering facts. Why say it here? The sutras before it list powers that come from samyama, and then ask the practitioner to let even those go. This one names a power that sits nearest to freedom, because it works on time itself and on telling what is real from what only seems so. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it this way: time is nothing but moments in order, and seeing this clearly, the yogi knows things as they truly are. Later commentators differ little here, though they dwell on how the knowing is called a power and yet points beyond itself.
Think of a film strip held up to a window. Each frame is still and separate, yet run together they look like one moving scene. Seeing the single frames and their fixed order is the sutra's knowing: time is a row of moments, and discernment sees the row instead of the blur.
1. Pick an ordinary three-minute task today, such as washing a cup or climbing a flight of stairs. 2. Do it slowly and notice one small step at a time: this step, then the next, each beginning and ending. 3. Afterward, notice how the task felt as separate steps rather than one blur. Do not try to reach any special state. Only notice.
