Meaning · English
Gheranda said: the great seal, the sky seal, uddiyana, jalandhara, the root lock, the great lock, the great piercing, and khecari. These are the first seals and locks he names for Chanda.
Gheranda opens his third chapter by naming eight practices before he describes any of them. A mudra is a seal: a posture or gesture that closes something in. A bandha is a lock: a place in the body that is gathered and held. The text uses both words and does not stop to separate them. Take the names one at a time. Mahamudra is the great seal. Nabhomudra is the sky seal, from nabhas, sky or space. Uddiyana means flying up, and the manuals use it for drawing the belly up and back. Jalandhara is the throat lock. The name is read as holding the net or the water, and the manuals place it at the neck. Mulabandha is the root lock, at the base of the trunk. Mahabandha is the great lock. Mahavedha is the great piercing. Khecari means moving in the sky, or in space. The line gives no method and no reason. It works like a table of contents. The reason comes two verses later, where Gheranda says these seals give siddhis, the accomplishments of the yogi. Behind that claim stands the tradition's account of prana, the nadis (channels) and kundalini. That is the tradition's own picture, not a description of anatomy. What the line asks of a reader is only to know the names. Every one of these is learnt with a teacher, not from a page. Several involve long breath holds or pressure at the throat, and these can harm someone who forces them.
A choir singer stands to begin a long phrase. Her chin dips slightly, her lower belly draws in, and the floor of her pelvis firms without her deciding it. Something like this is the nearest everyday cousin of the locks. Today's mainstream understanding recognises some of the body parts involved. The pelvic floor can be tightened and released on purpose. The abdominal wall and diaphragm can be drawn in on an emptied chest. The chin can be tucked toward the throat. These are ordinary muscular actions, and they can be practised. Holding the breath while doing them is a different matter. Breath holds can bring on light-headedness and change heart rate and blood pressure, so anyone with heart, blood pressure, eye or pregnancy concerns should ask a doctor first. The tradition's reasons are not part of that picture. Prana, the nadis, kundalini and the claimed siddhis have no counterpart in physiology and no evidence behind them. They are the tradition's account of what the seals do. Nabhomudra and khecari have no clear modern match to compare against.
