Two Equal in Purity
Yoga Sutras 3.55
Meaning · English
When the clear stuff of the mind and the Self who sees are equally pure, there is complete aloneness. Here the chapter closes.
Four terms carry this sutra. Sattva is the mind's clear, bright quality, the part of it that can reflect. Purusha is the seer, the Self, the one who watches. Shuddhi is purity, being free of stain. Samya is sameness, evenness, a balance of two things. Kaivalya comes from kevala, meaning 'only' or 'alone': the seer standing by itself. Taken whole, the sutra says that when the mind's clarity becomes as pure as the seer, aloneness follows. Nothing else is added or required. Patanjali says this at the close of the chapter on powers. Having described the powers and the starlike discernment that sees everything, he names where they lead, and it is not to more of them. The powers belong to sattva, the mind. The goal is the seer's standing free of the mind. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, takes the purity of sattva to mean it has no more work to do for the seer, no more experience to supply and no stain left in it. Purusha was never stained. When both are pure in this way, the seer is alone. Later readers differ in how they describe the mind's part in this. The commentators agree that sattva is not turned into purusha. Both are pure, and the seer stays distinct.
Think of a window and the person looking through it. While the glass is smeared, you keep noticing the glass. Once it is wiped clean, you stop seeing it at all, and only the looking remains. The clean glass is the mind's clarity. The person looking is the seer, left on its own.
1. Once today, when you catch yourself pleased at being quick, right or skilled at something, pause for three breaths and only notice the pleasure. 2. Ask quietly: who is aware of this pleasure? Do not look for an answer. Just let the question stand. 3. In the evening, name one thing you did well today and leave it unclaimed. Set it down and go on with the day. Do not try to produce any power or special state.
