Knowing All at Once
Yoga Sutras 3.54
Meaning · English
Insight born of clear seeing is the one that carries across. It reaches every object, in every condition each passes through, and it does not move step by step. It takes everything in at once.
Three words carry this sutra. Viveka is the clear seeing that separates one thing from another. Taraka comes from a root meaning to cross over, so it is the knowing that carries a person across. Akrama is krama, a sequence, with a negative in front: no steps, no one-after-another. Patanjali says the knowing born of viveka has three marks. It covers all objects. It covers them in all their conditions, past, present and changing. And it arrives without sequence. Ordinary knowing goes piece by piece, this and then that. This knowing does not. Why say it here? The sutras just before it train attention on the smallest moments of time and on telling apart things that look alike. This sutra names where that training ends. The word taraka matters. It describes knowing that carries the practitioner onward, toward the freedom named in the next sutra. It is not a place to settle. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, says this knowing arises from one's own clarity, not from teaching, and that it takes in everything at once. The later commentators follow him on its range and on its lack of sequence. They also treat it as the highest fruit of viveka.
Walking a road, you meet the village, then the bridge, then the field, one after another. From the top of a hill you see all three together, and how they lie to each other. Ordinary knowing is the road. The knowing in this sutra is the hilltop view, where nothing has to be reached in turn.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with the lights low. Watch how thoughts arrive: one, then the next, never together. 2. Once today, tell two similar things apart, such as two leaves or two coins. Notice whether you did it in steps or in a single glance. 3. Whatever you notice, only notice it. Do not try to hold it or make it larger. This sutra describes a knowing that comes from clear seeing, and it cannot be forced.
