Meaning · English

Yashtimadhu, also yashtimadhuka and klitaka; another kind is klitanaka, and the one that grows in water is madhulika. Yashti is cool, heavy and sweet, good for the eyes, giving strength and colour, very unctuous, increasing semen, good for the hair and the voice; it overcomes pitta, vata and blood. It removes wounds, swelling, poison, vomiting, thirst, weariness and wasting.

Yashtimadhu means 'honey stick'. The root is a woody stalk that tastes sweet. Yashtimadhuka and klitaka are other names for the same plant. Klitanaka is a second kind, and madhulika is the kind that grows in water. Then come its qualities. It is cool (hima), heavy (guru) and sweet. It suits the eyes and gives strength and good colour. It is deeply oily (susnigdha). It adds to semen and is good for the hair and the voice. It overcomes pitta, the hot, sharp principle in the body, and vata, the dry, moving one, and it overcomes disorders of the blood. It removes wounds, swelling, poison, vomiting, thirst, weariness and wasting. The verse gives no reason. In this system's terms, cool and sweet calm pitta's heat, and heavy and oily steady vata's dryness. That is why the list leans toward soothing and rebuilding. Elsewhere, Charaka counts it among the rasayana herbs, the ones that renew; this verse does not say so. It reads as a herb for the hot, dry, worn-down state. By the same logic, one would not expect it to suit a heavy, sluggish state.

Think of an old leather strap left out in the sun. It goes dry, stiff and starts to crack. Rub oil into it and hang it in the shade, and it turns supple and stops splitting. Licorice is described the same way: cool, heavy and oily, for a body that heat and dryness have worn thin. And too much oil leaves leather sticky and slack.

Licorice root has been studied for indigestion and the stomach lining, for coughs and sore throats, and in laboratory work on inflammation. Most of these studies are small or early, and the results are mixed. Its soothing, coating feel on the throat matches the old word 'sweet and cool' fairly well. Claims about semen, hair, eyesight, poison or wasting have no firm modern support. The cautions are real. A natural compound in the root, glycyrrhizin, can raise blood pressure, hold water in the body and lower potassium, especially with regular use. Serious cases of muscle weakness and heart rhythm problems have been reported. It is not advised in pregnancy or while nursing, or with high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease. It can interact with water pills, blood pressure medicines, steroids, heart medicines and blood thinners. Products vary in strength and purity. Ask a doctor before taking it.
