Letting Go of Results
Bhagavad Gita 5.12
Meaning · English
The one united with God, having given up the fruit of action, attains lasting peace. The one not united, driven by desire and attached to the result, becomes entangled.
Krishna sets two people side by side, and both of them act. The difference is what they hold on to. Karma is action, and phala is fruit, the result that ripens from it. The first person, called yukta, is yoked or joined in consciousness with God. He gives up the fruit, which means he lets go of his grip on the outcome. He still does the action. Krishna says his peace is lasting. The second person, ayukta, is not joined. He acts from kama, desire, and his mind is stuck to the phala. The word for his condition comes from the root for a bond or knot, so he becomes tied up in his own wanting. Krishna gives the reason. Results are never fully in a person's hands, so a mind fastened to them rises and falls with every change. A mind that has let go of them has nothing to be shaken. Arjuna is asked to act without being knotted to what follows. Shankara reads the peace as the end of a path, in which a steady, purified mind leads to knowledge and release. Ramanuja reads it as action offered in service to the Lord, which leads the self to see itself clearly. Madhva reads it as action done with devotion to Vishnu, with release coming by his grace.
Two farmers sow the same field. One goes home, eats, and sleeps. The other stands among the rows all night, tugging each green shoot to hurry it up. He tires himself and damages the crop. The first is the one who gives up the fruit. The second is the one tied to the result.
1. Pick one task today whose result you cannot control, such as a message you sent, a form you filed, or a meal you cooked for someone. 2. When you finish it, say quietly, "My part is done." 3. When your mind goes back to the result, notice the pull in your chest or stomach, and return to the next small job. 4. At night, note whether you felt lighter than usual after that task.
A woman submits a bid for a small contract at ten at night. She refreshes her email every few minutes, rereads what she wrote, and imagines the client's reaction. Her shoulders are tight and her supper goes cold. Krishna's teaching would change this in steps. She would first treat the bid as the action that was hers, and it is finished. She would then see the refreshing as the grip on the fruit, because it does nothing for the result. She would put the phone in another room and do the next small thing, washing the dishes or setting out clothes for the morning. She would still care that the bid was good. She would simply stop holding the outcome in her hands all night. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired, anxious mind clings hardest to what it cannot control. The teaching does not promise the contract, and it does not take away her disappointment if the answer is no. Where worry has grown into sleeplessness or constant dread, a doctor should be seen as well.
