Work That Purifies

Bhagavad Gita 5.11

Meaning · English

With body, mind, intellect, and even the bare senses, the yogis perform action, giving up attachment, for the purification of the self.

Three words carry this. Karma is action, anything done. Sanga is attachment, the clinging to the doing or to what it will earn. Shuddhi is cleansing, clearing what has become clouded. Krishna tells Arjuna that yogis do not hold back from work. They act with the body, the mind, the intellect and the senses, with every faculty they have. What they drop is the clinging, not the doing. The reason he gives is that the work has a purpose beyond its result: it cleanses the self. Work done with grasping leaves the mind more knotted, and work done without it leaves the mind clearer. For Arjuna, who wants to run from the battlefield, this closes off the idea that a purified person must stop acting. Krishna asks him to act and let go of attachment, and that is how the cleansing happens. Shankara reads the word for 'only' as acting without the sense of 'mine', and the purified mind as ready for knowledge. Ramanuja reads the action as a discipline that prepares the self to see itself clearly. Madhva reads it as work offered to Vishnu, which makes the doer fit for knowing him. All three agree that the work is meant to cleanse the one who does it.

A woman rubs a brass lamp with ash and a rag on the morning of a festival. Her arm, her eyes and her patience all go into it. She is not polishing for a neighbour's praise. The lamp gets clean, and so does her restless mind. The rubbing is the action, the shine is the cleansing, and the wish for praise is the attachment she leaves out.

1. Pick one small chore today, such as washing dishes, sweeping a floor or folding clothes, and give it ten full minutes. 2. Use your hands, eyes and attention on it, and notice each time your mind drifts to who will thank you or what it will earn. 3. When that thought comes, let it pass and go back to the task. 4. When you finish, notice whether your mind feels any clearer than when you started.

A woman washes the last dishes at eleven at night after the guests have gone. Nobody thanked her, and she is already counting what she did against what others did. The verse would change this moment in small steps. She would see that the sourness comes from clinging to credit, not from the dishes. She would put her hands, eyes and attention into the plate in front of her. When the grievance returns, she would let it go and go back to the plate. By the end the kitchen is clean, and she may be less sour than when she began. Ordinary experience bears this out: a mind busy with the task has less room to rehearse its complaints. The verse does not promise that she will be thanked, that the unfairness in the house will vanish, or that tiredness will lift. It does not replace a conversation she may need to have with her family. What it offers is a way of doing the work that Krishna says cleanses the doer.
