Untouched Like a Lotus
Bhagavad Gita 5.10

Meaning · English
One who acts, offering every action to God and letting go of attachment, is not touched by sin, just as a lotus leaf is not touched by the water resting on it.
Three words carry the verse. Karma is action, everything a person does. Sanga is attachment, and its root sense is sticking or clinging, the way a burr sticks to cloth. Lipyate means to be smeared or stained. Krishna tells Arjuna that acting is not what stains a person. Clinging is. The one who places every action in God's hands, and lets go of the grip on it, goes through work the way a lotus leaf goes through rain. The water touches the leaf and does not soak in. Arjuna has been wondering whether he must flee action to be free, and this is Krishna's answer: act, and let the sticking go. The reason is given just before and after: the doer who clings to what an act will bring is the one who gets bound by it. Shankara reads the offering as work done for the Supreme with the sense of 'I am the doer' dropped, which prepares the mind for knowledge. Ramanuja reads it as action done as service and worship of the Lord. Madhva reads it as action done knowing God as the true master of all that happens. All three keep the same picture: busy hands, unclinging mind.
A waxed raincoat in a downpour. The rain lands on it all day, runs down in beads and drips off the hem, and the coat underneath stays dry. The rain is the work and its consequences. The coat is the mind that has dedicated its actions and clings to none of them.
1. Pick one task today that you usually rush, such as cooking, replying to a message or tidying a room. Before starting, say quietly, 'This is offered.' 2. Do it fully for its own sake, without checking for praise or thanks. 3. When it is done, notice the first urge to be credited or to replay it. Let that urge pass for one minute without acting on it. 4. At night, note whether the task left less residue in your mind than usual.
A village schoolteacher sits marking exam papers late in the evening. One script belongs to a relative's son, and the family has hinted that a few extra marks would be welcome. She feels the pull of the hint, the fear of an awkward wedding dinner, and the wish to be liked. Krishna's teaching, applied here, goes in steps. First she notices that the pull is attachment, a clinging to how others will react, and not part of the marking itself. Second, she sets the work down as a duty offered to God, not as a bargain with the family. Third, she marks the paper by the same standard as the rest, and finishes it without rehearsing the quarrel that may follow. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: when a person is anxious about an outcome, judgment bends toward it. The teaching does not promise the family will be pleased, or that the dinner will be easy. It does not remove the sting of their displeasure. It speaks only of how she carries the act, and of what stays on her afterwards.
