Meaning · English
Whoever takes in, with true faith, this nectar of knowledge, drawn from an ocean of bliss and spoken by Krishna, whose feet the lords of yoga serve, is freed, and the world with them. To end the fear of worldly becoming, the maker of the scriptures took the essence of the Veda, knowledge and its realization, as a bee takes honey. He gave that nectar from the ocean to his servants to drink. I bow to Krishna, the first person, the best of beings.
Shuka closes the teaching with two verses. The first names what was given. It is jnana, knowledge, here called nectar because it is said to end death's grip on the mind. It comes from an ocean of bliss, and Krishna speaks it to his own devotee. Shuka says that whoever takes it in with sacchraddha, true faith, is freed, and the world with them. Faith here means trust enough to act on what is heard. The second verse says why it was given: bhavabhaya, the fear of worldly becoming, of being born, losing and dying again. The one who made the scriptures took the essence of the Veda and pressed it into jnana, knowledge, and vijnana, knowledge lived and verified in experience. Shuka compares this to a bee gathering honey from many flowers. Then the nectar was handed to his servants to drink, so the devotees receive the honey already made. They need not search every flower. Shuka ends with a bow to Krishna, the first person, the best of beings. The commentators read the bee as showing how much of the Vedas is distilled into Krishna's teaching. The listener is asked to drink, not only to admire.
A cook simmers a huge pot of sugarcane juice for hours until only a small, dark, sweet block of jaggery is left, then hands pieces to everyone waiting. The pot is the vast Veda. The block is its essence, boiled down by Krishna and given to be eaten, not studied.
1. Choose one teaching from this book that moved you, a single saying you can repeat. 2. Tonight, before sleep, read it slowly aloud once, taking it as true for five minutes. 3. Bow your head briefly, or pause in quiet, as a way of receiving it. 4. Tomorrow, tell it in your own words to one person you trust.
It is 3 a.m. and a man sits on the edge of his bed. His biopsy result comes Monday, and his mind keeps running ahead to the worst. The verse speaks to that hour. Shuka calls the fear of becoming the thing the teaching was made to end, and says the remedy is meant to be drunk, taken in, and not merely admired. So the man could stop arguing with the fear. He could take one line he trusts, say it slowly, and let it be what his mind rests on until morning. Ordinary experience says fear grows larger in the dark and smaller once something steady is set against it. He could also tell his wife what is on his mind, which is the same act as passing the nectar on. The text's claim is that real freedom comes from this knowledge, and that claim is its own teaching. The limit is plain. A verse does not change Monday's result, does not replace the doctor, and does not promise the fear will leave. It gives him something to hold while he waits.
