Meaning · English
Then, holding Him within his heart, the great devotee went to Vishala. Taking up austerity just as the one friend of the world had taught it, he reached the state of Hari.
Shuka tells Parikshit how Uddhava's story ends. Four words carry it. Mahabhagavata means great devotee. Bhagavata comes from bhaj, to share in, so a bhagavata is one who shares in the Lord's life through love. Jagadekabandhu means the one friend of the world, and the text gives Krishna this name at the moment Uddhava leaves him. Tapas, austerity, comes from tap, to heat: a plain, steady discipline that burns off distraction. Gati means a going, and so a destination or state. The clauses run in order. First Uddhava places Krishna in his heart, so the parting does not leave him empty. Then he walks to Vishala, the place the text elsewhere calls Badari. There he takes up tapas exactly as Krishna taught it, adding nothing of his own. Last, he reaches Hari's state. The commentators take this as reaching Hari himself, not some lesser goal. Why is it told here? Uddhava had begged to go with Krishna. The answer was a teaching to carry, not a companion to follow. This verse shows what carrying it looks like: he keeps the friend within, goes where he was sent, does what he was told, and arrives.
A child leaves her mother's kitchen carrying a lit lamp in cupped hands, shielding the flame all the way along the dark lane to her own house. The lamp is Krishna held in the heart, and the cupped hands are the discipline taught. The flame stays lit because she keeps walking and does not set it down.
1. Tonight, pick one piece of advice from a teacher or elder that you have let slip, and write it on a slip of paper. 2. Each morning for seven days, spend one minute picturing the person who gave it, then do that one thing exactly as they said, without improving it. 3. Each evening, mark the paper with a tick or a blank. 4. On the eighth day, notice whether holding the giver in mind made the task easier or harder to begin.
A young woman boards a night train to a new city. Her grandfather, who raised her, gave her three plain instructions at the station: eat at fixed hours, write home on Sundays, and finish what she starts. The platform empties. She is alone with a bag and a ticket, and the instructions feel thin without his voice. She can do what Uddhava does in the text. She keeps his face in mind, and she follows the instructions as he gave them, not as she would rather have them. The first Sunday she writes, even though nothing has happened yet. The first week she eats at the hours he named. Ordinary experience bears out that a task is easier to keep when a particular loved face stands behind it. The verse promises her nothing about the city, the job or the loneliness. It does not shorten the missing, and it is no replacement for a doctor or a friend where one is needed. The text says only that Uddhava kept the teaching close, did as he was told, and reached Hari. The reader meets that as the text's own account of what happened to him.
