Told this by Hari of deep wisdom, Uddhava walked around him in reverence and laid his head at his feet. His heart melted, and with streams of tears he drenched those feet, though he was beyond the pull of joy and sorrow. Shaken by a parting from love too strong to let go, he could not bring himself to leave. At last he went, with great effort, carrying his master's sandals on his head, bowing again and again.

Three words carry this. Pradakshina is walking around someone with your right side toward them, the old gesture of honour. Sneha is affection, and the word also means oil: love that clings and soaks in. Paduka are sandals, what a person's feet have worn. Shuka describes the parting step by step. Krishna has finished teaching, and Uddhava circles him, bows his head to his feet and weeps on them. Shuka adds that Uddhava was dvandva-para, one who stands beyond the pairs of pleasure and pain that Krishna has just described. He wept anyway. The text does not treat the tears as a failure of the teaching. It treats them as love that the teaching has not erased. Uddhava cannot leave. The bond is called very hard to give up, and he is described as overcome by it. He goes in the end only with effort, with Krishna's sandals on his head, turning back to bow many times. This is told here because Krishna has sent him away to a life of quiet. The question is what becomes of devotion when the teacher is no longer in front of you. Shuka's answer is that the love stays, and he shows where it rests: on the head, in the keeping of something the beloved has touched.

A boy leaves his grandmother's village by the evening bus. She has pressed her old shawl into his arms, and he holds it to his chest and turns to wave at every bend. The shawl is the sandals: a small worn thing that lets love go on its journey.

1. Choose one small object that belongs to someone you love or revere, such as a letter, a shawl or a pen. 2. Tonight, hold it for one minute. Do not hurry to a thought. Notice what rises. 3. Say a thank-you for that person, aloud or silently. 4. Put it back somewhere you will see it tomorrow.

A grandmother stands at the bus stand with her grandson's bag still in her hand. His holiday is over and the bus is pulling out. She waves, then turns, and her eyes are wet. The verse lets her stay with that. Uddhava does not stop his tears or call them a lapse. He bows, he weeps, he delays, and then he walks. So she does not need to hurry into brightness for the sake of the people around her. She can let the feeling run its full length, say goodbye properly, and carry something home, perhaps the small shirt he left behind, which gives the love a place to rest. Ordinary experience agrees that a farewell cut short or hidden tends to linger, while one given its time usually settles. The verse does not promise that the ache will vanish, or that the bus ride home will be easy. Uddhava leaves still shaken, and the text lets him. Grief that does not ease over weeks, or that stops someone eating, sleeping or working, is a matter for a doctor or counsellor as well.
