Bear the pairs of opposites. Be of good conduct, with the senses reined in, calm, the mind gathered, joined to knowledge and to realized knowledge. Think over alone, in quiet, what you have learned from me. Let speech and mind be absorbed in me, and take delight in my dharma. Passing beyond the three paths, you will come to me, and to what lies past them.

Krishna gives Uddhava a short list for the road ahead. Titiksha, bearing, comes from a root meaning to endure. It means carrying heat and cold, praise and blame, gain and loss without being knocked over. These are the dvandvas, the pairs of opposites. Suśila is good conduct, and the senses are held in rein. Shanta is calm, and the mind is gathered in one place. Then comes jnana with vijnana. Jnana is knowing what was taught. Vijnana is knowing it as lived, the way you know a road you have walked and not only seen on a map. Next Krishna asks Uddhava to take what he has heard and turn it over alone, in quiet, so that it settles. Speech and mind are then to rest on Krishna, and Uddhava is to take pleasure in Bhagavata dharma, Krishna's own way. That means the walk is meant to be enjoyed, not just survived. The last line says that passing beyond the three paths, Uddhava comes to Krishna. The text does not name the three paths here, and the commentators do not need them named for the point to stand. Krishna says this now because Uddhava has begged to follow him, and he is sending him away with a way of living in place of his company. The teaching asks Uddhava for steadiness, quiet, and a mind kept turned toward Krishna.

A potter lets a freshly shaped pot sit in a shaded corner before it goes near the fire. It dries slowly and evenly, and it does not crack. Hearing a teaching is the shaping. Quiet, repeated thought is the slow drying that lets it hold.

1. Pick one small discomfort today, such as a hot room, a long queue or a sharp remark. Bear it for one full minute without commenting or fixing it. Notice what you do with your face and breath. 2. Tonight, sit alone for five minutes somewhere quiet, with no phone. Recall one thing you have heard from a teacher or a text, and turn it over slowly. 3. Before sleep, say one line of prayer or a name of Krishna aloud, once, and then stop.

A woman is cooking for forty guests at her niece's wedding. The kitchen is hot, a relative has just called the dal too bland, and her feet ache. In the old teaching, the first step is to notice that heat and criticism are a pair of opposites that come and go, and to keep her hands working evenly. The second is that the sharp reply she could make is held back, and the senses are kept in rein. Later, in a quiet corner, she can turn the evening over: what was said, what she held back, and what she learned. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness weakens restraint, so the quiet hour afterwards counts as part of the practice. The verse does not promise that the remark will stop hurting, or that her feet will stop aching. It does not say the evening will go well. It describes the steadiness Krishna asks of Uddhava and the quiet thought that lets a teaching sink in.
