Meaning · English

Go, Uddhava, at my bidding, to my hermitage called Badari. There, made clean by bathing in the water that is holy from my feet, and by the sight of the Alakananda, with every stain shaken off, wear bark for clothing, my friend. Live on what the forest gives, content with little, and free of longing for ease.

Three words carry the passage. Ashrama is a hermitage, a place of effort, from shram, to labour. Tirtha is a ford, a crossing place, from a root meaning to cross over. Nihspriha is freedom from craving, spriha being the reaching-out of wanting. Valkala is simply bark cloth, the plainest garment there is. Krishna sends Uddhava to Badari, his own hermitage in the Himalaya. Uddhava is to bathe in the Alakananda and sip its water, and the commentators take the river as holy because it carries the touch of Krishna's feet. Seeing the river itself cleans him, and every stain falls away. He is then to dress in bark, eat what the forest offers, and want nothing more. Why teach this here? Uddhava had asked to go with Krishna. Krishna's answer is a place, a river and a way of living. The teaching he has just given must be lived somewhere quiet, with few possessions. It asks Uddhava to go as he is, to bathe, to wear little, to eat plainly and to let craving for comfort drop. Nothing here is punishment. Krishna calls him angga, a dear friend, as he sends him.

A traveller walks out of a crowded station onto a hill path. He leaves the heavy suitcase behind and carries a cloth bag and a bottle of spring water. Badari is that hill path. The bark and the forest food are the light bag, and the craving for comfort is the suitcase left on the platform.

1. Tonight or tomorrow morning, wash your face and hands slowly with cold or cool water, and take one sip. Notice it for a full minute. 2. Eat one meal this week that is plain, with no extras, at a table without a screen. 3. Step outside for ten minutes, near a tree, a river or open sky, with nothing in your hands. 4. Name one comfort you reach for out of habit, and go without it for one day.

A man stands in his empty shop at dawn, the morning after handing the keys to his son. The shelves are bare and his hands do not know what to do. The old rhythm of opening, selling and counting is gone, and the day feels shapeless. Krishna's words to Uddhava give that morning a shape. There is somewhere to walk to. There is water to wash in and a plain meal to eat. There are fewer things to want. Ordinary experience bears out that cold water on the face, a long walk and simple food settle a restless mind, and that a hundred small cravings for comfort make a hard day harder. The verse does not promise that the ache of leaving will lift. Uddhava is parting from the person he loves most, and the text does not hide that. It also does not replace medical advice. Anyone with a weak heart, joint trouble or a condition needing regular food should keep to their doctor's guidance before bathing in cold water or fasting. What it offers is a plain, workable path out of a familiar life, in the text's own telling.
