Parikshit Revived
Mahabharata, Aswamedha Parva 66
The story · English
Vasudeva Krishna returned to the Kuru capital with a great company of the Vrishnis. He was accompanied by Valadeva at the head of the train, along with Subhadra, Rukmini's son Pradyumna, Yuyudhana, Charudeshna, Samva, Gada, Kritavarman, Sarana, Nisatha, and Unmukha. Krishna had come at the request of Yudhishthira, knowing the time for the horse-sacrifice had arrived. His purpose was to see Draupadi, Uttara, and Pritha, offering comfort to these noble women who had lost so many of their protectors. Upon their arrival, King Dhritarashtra and the high-souled Vidura received the visitors with the honors due to them. Krishna remained in the city, well adored by Vidura and Yuyutsu, while the Vrishni heroes stayed as guests in the capital.
It was during this stay that the royal prince Parikshit was born. However, the joy of his birth was short-lived. Because he had been struck by the Brahma weapon of Aswatthaman while still in the womb, the child emerged motionless and without life. When the citizens first heard of the prince's birth, they let out a great shout that echoed to the furthest edges of the horizon. But as soon as it became known that the child was dead, the noise ceased. The city was plunged into a deep grief. Krishna, deeply affected in mind and senses, hurried into the inner apartments of the palace with Yuyudhana by his side.
As Krishna entered, he found his aunt Kunti coming toward him. She was weeping loudly and calling his name repeatedly. Behind her followed Draupadi, Subhadra, and the other wives of the Pandavas' relatives, all of them crying piteously. Kunti, her voice choked with tears, spoke to the mighty-armed hero. She told him that he was their refuge and their glory, and that the entire race of Pandu now depended on him for protection. She said that the son of his sister's son had been born dead, slain by the weapon of Aswatthaman. She pleaded with Krishna to revive the boy and save them from their despair.
Kunti reminded Krishna of the vow he had made when Aswatthaman first launched the Brahma weapon. Krishna had promised that if the child came out of the womb dead, he would bring him back to life. Pointing to the child, Kunti urged him to rescue Uttara, Subhadra, Draupadi, herself, and the Pandavas. She explained that the future of their line and the final rites of Pandu, of her father-in-law, and of the young Abhimanyu depended on this child. She spoke of the love Abhimanyu had for Uttara and the promises he had made to her before he died, begging Krishna to make those words come true for the sake of the family.
Kunti recalled how Abhimanyu had told Uttara that her son would one day reside with the Vrishnis and Andhakas, where he would learn the science of arms, wonderful weapons, and the arts of politics and morality. After begging Krishna to fulfill this destiny, Kunti and the other women raised their arms and collapsed to the earth in grief. With eyes clouded by tears, they lamented that the son of Vasudeva's nephew had been born dead. Seeing her in such distress, Janarddana reached down and gently took hold of Kunti, raising her from the ground and speaking words to comfort her.
