Yudhishthira in Heaven
Mahabharata, Svargarohana Parva 1
The story · English
Janamejaya asked Vaisampayana about the fates of his ancestors, the Pandavas and the sons of Dhritarashtra, after they had left the earth. Vaisampayana began the account by describing Yudhishthira's arrival in Heaven. Upon entering the celestial realm, the just king was shocked to see Duryodhana. Far from being punished, Duryodhana sat upon an excellent seat, radiating glory like the sun and surrounded by deities and righteous beings. Yudhishthira was suddenly filled with rage and turned away in disgust. He told his companions that he had no desire to share a paradise with a man driven by greed and blindness, a man for whom kinsmen were slaughtered and for whom their wife, Draupadi, had been dragged into the assembly before their elders.
Yudhishthira declared that he would rather go wherever his brothers were than remain in the presence of Duryodhana. The sage Narada smiled and told the king that in Heaven, all enmities cease. He explained that Duryodhana had attained the region of heroes because he had offered his body as a libation on the fire of battle and had maintained the practices of a Kshatriya, remaining fearless in a terrifying situation. Narada urged Yudhishthira to let go of the memory of the dice match, the afflictions of Draupadi, and the woes caused by their kinsmen. He advised the king to meet Duryodhana with the polite intercourse befitting the ordinances of Heaven, for there is no room for hatred in that place.
Despite Narada's words, Yudhishthira remained troubled. He questioned how an unrighteous man like Duryodhana, who had devastated the earth and caused such immense suffering, could be so honored. He asked Narada where the truly high-souled heroes were. He sought his brothers, the courageous Karna, Dhrishtadyumna, Satyaki, and the other warriors who died following the code of the Kshatriya. He asked for Virata, Drupada, Dhrishtaketu, Shikhandi, the sons of Draupadi, and the irresistible Abhimanyu. Yudhishthira expressed his deep grief over Karna, noting that he had only learned of their brotherhood too late, and lamented that he had allowed Arjuna to slay a man who was actually his own brother.
Yudhishthira told the deities that he could not stay in a place where he was separated from Bhima, Arjuna, the twins, and the righteous Draupadi. He insisted that this place was not Heaven to him if his loved ones were absent. The gods responded that if he truly wished to find them, he could do so without delay. At the command of the chief of the deities, a celestial messenger was appointed to lead Yudhishthira to his friends and kinsmen. The messenger walked ahead while the king followed behind. However, the path they entered was not a path of light, but one that was inauspicious, difficult, and trodden by those who had committed sinful deeds.
The path was shrouded in thick darkness and covered in moss and hair. It smelled of the stench of sinners and was miry with flesh and blood, swarming with gadflies, stinging bees, and gnats. Grisly bears lurked nearby, and rotting corpses, smeared with fat and blood and torn apart, lay scattered across the ground. The way was skirted by a blazing fire and infested with vultures and crows with iron beaks, as well as evil spirits with needle-like mouths. Yudhishthira proceeded through this foulness, his mind filled with diverse thoughts, wondering how the path to his brothers could be so horrific.
As they continued, Yudhishthira encountered a river of boiling water and a forest where the leaves were sharp swords and razors. He saw plains of white sand that were intensely heated, rocks made of iron, and jars filled with boiling oil. He witnessed the tortures inflicted upon sinful men and the painful thorns of the Kuta-salmalika trees. Overwhelmed by the foul odor and the sights of agony, Yudhishthira asked the celestial messenger how much further they had to go and what this region of the gods actually was. The messenger stopped and told the king that this was as far as he was permitted to lead him, offering to take him back if he was tired.
As Yudhishthira resolved to return, he suddenly heard piteous lamentations from all around. Voices called out to him, calling him the son of Dharma and the son of Pandu. They told him that his approach had brought a delightful breeze and a sweet scent that relieved their torment. They begged him to stay a few moments longer, for as long as he was present, their sufferings ceased. Yudhishthira, filled with compassion, stood still. Although he could not immediately recognize the voices, they sounded familiar. When he asked who they were and why they were there, the voices replied that they were Karna, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva, Dhrishtadyumna, Draupadi, and the sons of Draupadi.
Yudhishthira was devastated. He wondered what sinful acts could have led such righteous and truthful beings to a place of such woe, while the sinful Duryodhana enjoyed prosperity. He questioned if he was dreaming or suffering a mental delusion. In a surge of wrath, he censured the gods and the deity of Righteousness. He told the celestial messenger to inform the gods that he would not return to their realm, but would instead remain in Hell to provide comfort to his afflicted brothers. The messenger returned to Indra, the chief of the deities, and reported Yudhishthira's words and his decision to stay among the suffering.
Immediately, Indra and all the gods, including the embodied deity of Righteousness, arrived at the spot. Their presence caused the darkness to vanish and the horrors of Hell—the boiling river, the iron jars, and the rotting corpses—to disappear. A cool, fragrant breeze blew as the Maruts, Vasus, Rudras, and great Rishis gathered. Indra comforted Yudhishthira, explaining that the vision was an illusion. He told him that every king must behold Hell. Some enjoy the fruits of their good deeds first and then endure Hell, while others endure Hell first before enjoying Heaven. He revealed that Yudhishthira had been shown this place because he had once deceived Drona regarding his son.
Indra informed him that his brothers and Karna had all attained felicity. The deity of Righteousness then spoke, telling Yudhishthira that this was his third and final test, following the tests in the Dwaita woods and the trial of the dog. By choosing to stay in Hell for his brothers, Yudhishthira had been fully purified of sin. He was led to the celestial river Ganga, where he bathed and cast off his human body. Assuming a celestial form, he was freed from all grief and enmity. He finally reached the place where the Pandavas and the Dhartarashtras lived in peace, each enjoying the status they deserved. Every king must once behold Hell.
