The Last Journey

Mahabharata, Mahaprasthanika Parva 3

The story · English

Shakra arrived in a celestial chariot, his arrival announced by a thunderous sound that filled the earth and sky. He invited King Yudhishthira to ascend and enter Heaven. Yudhishthira looked at the ground where his brothers and Draupadi had fallen and told the deity of a thousand eyes that he could not leave them behind. He insisted that his brothers and the deserving princess Draupadi should accompany him. Shakra comforted him, explaining that his brothers and Draupadi had already reached Heaven in their spirit forms. He told Yudhishthira that it was ordained for him alone to enter the celestial realm while still inhabiting his human body, urging him not to yield to grief.

As Yudhishthira prepared to leave, he noticed a dog that had remained devotedly by his side. He told Shakra that this animal was exceedingly loyal and must be allowed to go with him, for his heart was full of compassion. Shakra warned the king that he had won immortality and all the felicities of Heaven, but he must cast off the dog to claim them. He argued that there would be no cruelty in this act. However, Yudhishthira replied that it is difficult for a righteous man to commit an unrighteous act. He stated clearly that he did not desire a prosperity that required him to abandon a creature devoted to him.

Shakra pressed further: there was no place in Heaven for dogs, and deities called Krodhavasas would strip away the merits of anyone who brought one. Yudhishthira replied that abandoning the devoted was as sinful as slaying a Brahmana, and that he would never give up the terrified, the devoted or the afflicted. Shakra asked why he was so stupefied, since he had already renounced his brothers and Draupadi. Yudhishthira answered that there is neither friendship nor enmity with the dead; he had not abandoned them while they lived, but could not revive them. Frightening one who sought protection, slaying a woman, stealing a Brahmana's property and injuring a friend were, he said, each as sinful as abandoning the devoted.

Upon hearing this, the dog was transformed into Dharma, the deity of Righteousness. Dharma spoke in a sweet, praising voice, telling Yudhishthira that he possessed the intelligence and conduct of his father Pandu. He reminded the king of a previous test in the woods of Dwaita, where Yudhishthira had prioritised the revival of Nakula to be kind to his stepmother. Dharma declared that by choosing a devoted dog over the celestial chariot, Yudhishthira had proven himself peerless. He told the king that because of this compassion, he had won regions of inexhaustible felicity and a high celestial goal.

Yudhishthira then ascended to Heaven in a chariot accompanied by Dharma, Shakra, the Maruts, the Ashvinis, and other deities and Rishis. His own effulgence made the entire sky blaze as he rose. Narada, the great speaker, addressed the gathering, noting that Yudhishthira's achievements transcended all other royal sages. He remarked that no one else had ever attained Heaven in their own human body. Hearing this, Yudhishthira saluted the deities and the sages but told them that he wished to go wherever his brothers were, regardless of whether that place was happy or miserable.

Shakra, the chief of the deities, urged Yudhishthira to stay and enjoy the rewards of his meritorious deeds. He questioned why the king still clung to human affections when he had achieved a success no other man had ever known. He pointed out that his brothers had already won their own regions of felicity and invited him to look upon the celestial Rishis and Siddhas around him. Yudhishthira, possessing great intelligence, answered one last time. He stated that he did not venture to dwell anywhere separated from his brothers or from Draupadi, who was righteous in conduct and intelligence.
