The Hunter's Arrow

Mahabharata, Mausala Parva 4

The story · English

Daruka, Kesava, and Vabhru followed the trail of Rama and found him sitting thoughtfully, leaning against a tree in a solitary place. Finding Rama there, Krishna commanded Daruka to go to the Kurus. He told him to inform Partha of the great slaughter of the Yadus and urge Arjuna to come quickly after hearing how the Brahmanas' curse had destroyed the Yadavas. Daruka, overcome with grief, departed in his chariot. Krishna then turned to Vabhru and told him to go quickly to protect the women of the house, warning him that robbers might be tempted to attack them for the sake of their wealth. Vabhru, though still unsteady from wine and heartbroken by the loss of his kinsmen, set out to obey.

As Vabhru moved away from Kesava, an iron bolt attached to a mallet in a hunter's hand suddenly sprang of itself upon him and killed him, for Vabhru too had been included in the curse of the Brahmanas. Seeing his kinsman dead, Kesava told his elder brother Rama to wait for him there while he went to place the women under the care of other relatives. Krishna entered the city of Dwaravati and told his father to protect the women until Dhananjaya arrived. He said Rama was waiting at the edge of the forest and that he would meet him that day. He had now seen this carnage of the Yadus just as he had once seen the slaughter of the Kuru warriors. He told his father that he could no longer bear to see the city without the Yadus and intended to practice penances in the woods with Rama.

A loud wail of sorrow rose from the ladies and children of his house. Hearing their cries, Kesava returned to them and offered comfort, promising that Arjuna would come and relieve them of their grief. After this, Kesava returned to the forest and found Rama in a deep state of Yoga. As he watched, a mighty white snake with a thousand heads and red eyes issued from Rama's mouth. The Naga, as large as a mountain, left the human body and proceeded toward the ocean. He was received with great honor by the Ocean, various sacred rivers, and a host of celestial snakes, including Vasuki, Takshaka, and Karkotaka, who offered him Arghya and water to wash his feet.

After his brother departed the human world, Vasudeva wandered the lonely forest in deep thought. He remembered the warnings Gandhari had given long ago and the words of the Rishi Durvasas. Reflecting on the destruction of the Vrishnis and Andhakas, as well as the previous fall of the Kurus, he concluded that the hour of his own departure had come. Although he was the Supreme Deity, he wished to die to dispel doubts about human existence, to uphold the three worlds and to make true the words of Durvasas, Atri's son. Having restrained his senses, speech, and mind through Yoga, Krishna laid himself down on the bare earth, fully conversant with the truth of all things and ready to leave the physical plane.

A hunter named Jara, who was searching for deer, came upon the spot. Mistaking the reclining Krishna for a deer, Jara shot an arrow that pierced his heel. When the hunter approached his prey, he saw a man in yellow robes with many arms, rapt in Yoga. Terrified and realizing his mistake, Jara touched the feet of Kesava in apology. Krishna comforted the hunter and then ascended to heaven in a blaze of splendor. He was received by Vasava, the Ashvinis, Rudra, the Adityas, and countless celestial beings, Rishis, and Apsaras. The deities and Gandharvas bowed in humility and sang hymns of praise, and Indra joyfully praised him, as Narayana, the Lord of all, reached his own inconceivable region.
