Resting Inside Action
Bhagavad Gita 5.13
Meaning · English
Having renounced all activities by the mind, the self-controlled embodied one remains happily in the city of nine gates, neither doing anything at all nor causing anything to be done.
Three words carry it. Sannyasa is a laying down, the way a porter sets a load on the ground. Dehi is the one who has a body, who lives in it without being only that. Vashi is one who holds the reins, the self-controlled. Krishna tells Arjuna that such a person lays down all activities, and he says by the mind. The hands keep working. What stops is the claim: I am the one doing this, and all of it rests on me. That person stays happily in the body, which Krishna calls a city of nine gates, the openings through which the senses take in the world and send it out. Inside, he is neither the doer nor the one who makes others do. The reason lies in the verses just before: attachment to results binds, and giving them up brings lasting peace. Arjuna is about to fight, so he needs to hear that acting need not bind him. Shankara reads this as the knower of the Self, who sees action belonging to body and senses and rests in the Self. Ramanuja reads it as the disciplined worker who gives up ownership of the action while still working. Madhva reads it as seeing God, not oneself, as the true mover.
A passenger on a long train walks the aisle, eats, talks, changes seats. Yet he does not believe he is pushing the carriage along the track. He moves inside the journey and rests in it. The body is the carriage, the world is the track, and the self-controlled person is that unworried traveller.
1. Pick one task today that you care about, such as a message you must write or a meal you must cook. Before starting, say quietly: I will do my part, and the rest is not mine to carry. 2. Work on it for ten or fifteen minutes with full attention, and notice where your shoulders and jaw tighten when you think of how it will turn out. 3. Each time you notice that, loosen the body and return to the next small movement of the work. 4. When it is done, sit for one minute and notice whether any quiet is left over.
A woman is cooking for forty guests on the morning of her daughter's wedding, and the caterer has not arrived. Her hands are busy, but her mind is already at the door, rehearsing disaster and carrying the whole day on her back. Krishna's teaching would change this in steps. First, the work continues, because nothing here says to stop cooking. Second, the claim that everything depends on her alone is set down. Third, her attention returns to what is in front of her, the onions, the pot, the next phone call. Ordinary experience confirms that a clenched mind tires faster and works worse than a settled one. The teaching also says she can stay happily in her body even while the day is loud. It does not promise that the caterer arrives, that nothing will go wrong, or that worry will vanish. It offers a different way of standing inside the work, and some stress will remain, as it does for anyone who cares.
