Closing words on the seals

Gheranda Samhita 3.94

Meaning · English

This collection of the mudras, Chanda, has now been told, and it is auspicious. It is dear to all the siddhas, the accomplished ones. It destroys old age and death.

This is the closing line of Gheranda's long teaching on the mudras, and its own heading calls it a statement of their fruits. Gheranda is speaking to his student Chanda. Mudra means a seal or gesture: a way of closing the body's energy in on itself, as the tradition describes it. Patala here means a collection or a bundle, so the whole set of mudras taught in this chapter is gathered under one phrase. The text calls the set shubha, auspicious or good. It then says the set is dear to all the siddhas. A siddha is a person who has reached accomplishment in yoga, so the claim is that the people who have walked the path value these practices most. The last claim is the largest: that the mudras destroy old age and death. Read plainly, this is what the text promises, and it is the tradition's claim, not a statement of fact. The text gives no reason in this line beyond the worth of the practices themselves. Elsewhere in the chapter the tradition ties the mudras to kundalini and the nadis, its account of subtle energy and its channels, and that is the background to such promises. The verse asks nothing of the practitioner directly. It closes the teaching, names its value, and leaves the reader to see how high the text places it. The mudras are learnt with a teacher, since a page cannot correct what it cannot see.

A woman in her seventies, sitting at the edge of her bed in the morning and slowly breathing before she stands, is a fair picture of what gentle yoga practice can be. Today's mainstream understanding says that regular, calm movement and attention to breath can help with steadiness, flexibility, mood and a sense of ease, and that these matter as people grow older. That is a modest claim, and it is well within what a family doctor would say about unhurried exercise in general. The promise that mudras destroy old age and death has no support. Ageing and death are not things any practice removes, and medicine does not suggest otherwise. Kundalini and the nadis are the tradition's own account and have no counterpart in anatomy. Some of the stronger seals involve held breath or strong muscular locks, and these can strain people with heart, blood pressure or eye conditions, so they are not for casual trial from a page. Read as devotion and as praise of a discipline, the line stands. Read as a medical forecast, it does not.
