Announcing the Five Dharanas

Gheranda Samhita 3.68

Meaning · English

The shambhavi mudra has now been told. Hear next the five dharanas. Once a person has come to these holdings of the mind, what on earth remains out of reach?

This line is a hinge. Gheranda has finished one mudra and turns to the next set, and the text's own heading calls it the telling of the five-fold dharana mudra. Take the words one at a time. Shambhavi is the mudra just described, named for Shiva, and it is the one being closed off. Mudra here means a sealing practice, a way of fixing the body or mind in place. Dharana comes from the idea of holding or bearing. It means fixing the mind on one support and keeping it there. Panca is five, so panchadharana is five such holdings. The line does not name them. It only says to listen, and the following verses supply them. The shelf this reading sits on names the supports as the elements. Then comes the claim. Gheranda says that anyone who has reached these dharanas will find nothing on earth unachievable. That is the tradition's promise, made to the student to show why the work is worth doing. It is not a measured result. The reason the text gives is simply the rank of the practice: a mind that can be held steady is the tool every other practice depends on. What it asks of a practitioner here is only to listen first. The method comes in the verses after.

A man sits in a hospital waiting room and starts counting the ceiling tiles, because his thoughts will not settle. He has stumbled on something close to a dharana: giving the mind one plain thing to rest on. Today's mainstream understanding agrees that steady, repeated focus on a single object can calm a restless mind, and that this is a trainable skill. It is the root of many present-day attention and relaxation exercises. The text's wider claim has no support. Nothing in current knowledge says that a held mind makes everything on earth attainable, and it is best read as the encouraging language of a manual. The five elements as objects of focus are the tradition's own scheme, not a description of how the body or the world works. Some people find that sitting quietly with the mind brings distress to the surface. Anyone in that position, or living with a mental health condition, does better to learn this with a teacher or doctor alongside.
