Stainless, Awake, Deluded So Long

Meaning · English
How wonderful: I am without stain, at peace, pure awareness, beyond nature. For all this long time, delusion alone has made a fool of me, dressing me in a part that was never mine.
Janaka speaks these words as the first cry of someone who has just seen what he is. The wonder is in the opening word, and the rest of the verse says why. Four words carry it. Niranjana means without stain. It comes from anjana, the kohl or smear put on the eye, so it means nothing has been smeared on him. Bodha means knowing or awareness, from budh, to wake. Janaka does not say he has knowledge. He says he is awareness. Prakriti is nature, everything the world puts forth: body, senses, mind and matter. He is paraḥ, beyond it, not touched by it. Moha is delusion, a bewildered mistaking of one thing for another. The clauses go in order. He is stainless, so no deed or fault has stuck to him. He is at peace, so nothing in him needs settling. He is awareness, and beyond the made world. Then he looks back. The delusion did not merely hide him. It mocked him, made him act a part, as an actor is made to play someone he is not. The Gita teaches this because the dialogue opened with Janaka asking how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answered that the self is already free and only needs recognising. Janaka now reports the recognition. Nothing was gained. A long mistake ended, and the astonishment is that the truth had never been absent.
A man hunts through every room for his spectacles, turning over cushions and cursing, while they sit on his forehead the whole time. When he finds them, he laughs. They were never lost. Only the searching was real. The spectacles are the self that was never missing, and the searching is the long delusion.
1. Tonight, before sleep, pick one label you carry about yourself, such as slow, unlucky or not enough. 2. Say it silently, then ask: who is aware of this label right now? 3. Stay with that question for two minutes. Notice that the one who is aware is not the label. 4. Tomorrow, when the label returns in an ordinary moment, name it quietly as a part you have been playing, and carry on with what you were doing.
A man stands at a school reunion with a drink in his hand. Someone laughs and says, "You were the slow one, weren't you?" Thirty years drop away and his shoulders fold. He has been playing that part since he was nine. The verse would change the moment in steps. First he notices the old part has been put on again, quickly and without his choosing. Next he notices that something in him is watching the folding happen, and that this watcher was not slow or quick, only aware. Then he sees the label as a long habit and not a fact about the watcher. He can answer the friend kindly, or say nothing. Ordinary experience confirms how a label repeated for years comes to feel like the truth. The Gita teaches that the self was never stained by it. The verse does not promise the laugh will stop stinging, or that old hurts or real difficulties with learning will vanish. Where a child or an adult needs help with reading or memory, a doctor or teacher is the right person to ask.
