As I alone light up this body, so I light up the world. So the whole world is mine, or else nothing is. Ah, now I have set aside body and world, and by some skill the Highest Self is seen by me.
Three words carry it. Prakasha is light, from a root meaning to shine forth. Janaka says he is what lights things up, the way knowing lights up an object. Kaushala is skill or knack. He does not name the method. He says only that by some skill the seeing happened, and the tone is close to laughter at how simple it was. Paramatma is the highest self: param, highest, and atman, self. Now the clauses. The same awareness that shows him his body also shows him the world. Both appear in one light, so his body is no nearer to him than a hill is. From this he draws a plain either-or. If everything appears in his light, the whole world is his own. If it is only appearance, nothing in it is his to hold. The two come to the same rest. Then he says he has set body and world aside. He has not destroyed them. He has dropped the belief that he is them, and the Highest Self is seen. This answers what Janaka asked at the start: how freedom is won. His reply is that it was a turn of recognition, not a conquest. The text leaves one question: what is it that knows both body and world?
A single lamp stands on a kitchen table. Its light falls on the table, the cup, the wall and the hand that reaches for the cup, all in one glow, and the lamp never moves. The lamp is the self. Body and world are the things it lights, and neither lights itself.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with the room lit. Notice one bodily sensation, such as your seat or your breath. 2. Then notice one thing outside you, such as a sound or a wall. 3. Ask quietly: what is aware of both? Do not answer. Just stay with the question for a minute. 4. Do this once a day this week, at the same hour, and notice if the question feels the same each time.
A retired schoolteacher sits at her window the morning after a fall. Her hip aches. The street below is loud with a vegetable cart. She is tired of being a woman who hurts. Then she notices that the ache and the cart appear in the same way: both turn up in her awareness and both are known. The ache has not gone. But it has stopped being the whole room. She can ask what is noticing it, and in that asking there is some room. Ordinary experience confirms a small part of this: pain presses harder when attention clenches around it and loosens a little when attention widens. The text goes much further than that. It teaches that the knower is the Highest Self, which the body and world only appear before. The teaching does not promise the hip will heal or the ache will leave. If the pain is new or severe, she still needs a doctor, and the text does not say otherwise.
