Plain to see, close at hand, it moves in the cave of the heart: the great support. In it is set all that moves, breathes and blinks, all that is and is not, the most worth choosing, beyond what creatures grasp, the highest.

Three words carry the verse. Guha is a cave, a hidden hollow, and here it means the heart, the inner place where a person is most themselves. Brahman is the one reality the Upanishads keep pointing toward, the ground of everything. Prana is breath, the life-force that moves in a living body. Angiras, teaching Saunaka, says this Brahman is both manifest and near. It is not far away in some distant heaven. It moves in the cave of the heart. Everything that moves, breathes and blinks rests in it. So does everything that is and everything that is not, whether seen or unseen. Angiras calls it the one most worth choosing, and says it lies beyond the understanding of creatures. It is the highest. Saunaka had asked what is worth knowing, so Angiras begins with what everything stands on. Both ideas are held together: it is very close, and the mind cannot capture it. The listener is asked to turn from the many things that move and breathe to what holds them all. Shankara reads the cave as the intellect, where Brahman is known as the witness. He takes being and not-being as the manifest and unmanifest worlds, both resting in Brahman.

A lamp stands in a closed room, and every shadow on the walls trembles with its flame. Shadows move, flicker and vanish, and each one looks like a separate thing. Yet all depend on the one small light. The shadows are what moves, breathes and blinks. The lamp is the support in the cave of the heart.

1. Tonight, sit quietly for two minutes before sleep and rest a hand on your chest. 2. Notice three small movements: your breath, your pulse, your blinking. Let each be seen without changing it. 3. Then ask once, without hurry, what is aware of all three. Stay with the question, not an answer. 4. Do this again for a week, at the same hour, and note whether the nearness of the question changes.

A father sits by the cot at three in the morning, too tired to sleep. His newborn's chest rises and falls. Her eyelids flicker. A small hand opens and closes. He has been thinking about money and the week ahead. Then he watches the breath and the blinking, and the other thoughts loosen a little. The Mundaka's teaching, as Angiras gives it to Saunaka, points exactly there: what moves, breathes and blinks is not separate from what holds it, and that support is near, in the heart. He might simply stay with the sight, not trying to solve anything, and let the nearness be enough for a few minutes. Ordinary experience confirms that slow attention to breath and a sleeping face settles a restless mind. The verse promises no more than this. It does not make the baby well if she is ill, pay the rent or end the exhaustion. Where a child is unwell, a doctor is needed. What the verse offers is a place to rest the attention while the rest goes on.
