Meaning · English
Time is the cause of our speaking of past and the like. It is one, all-pervading and eternal. Direction is the cause of our speaking of east and the like. It is one, all-pervading and eternal.
The question: what lies behind words like 'yesterday', 'now', 'later', and behind words like 'east', 'near', 'far'? The Nyaya school answers that each needs its own real thing. Kala is time, the thing that makes us say past, present and future. Dik is direction, the thing that makes us say east, west, north, south. Annambhatta gives each three marks. It is one, not many. It is vibhu, meaning it reaches everywhere. It is nitya, meaning it never begins or ends. His own commentary, the Tarka-dipika, adds the reasoning: time is the support of everything that happens, and it is a general cause of every effect. Direction likewise is a general cause of every effect. Nothing that is produced is produced outside time and outside a place in space. Time and direction are not made things themselves. They are the standing conditions in which made things appear.
Think of a school notice board with a grid drawn across it. Every note pinned there gets a place by the grid, row and column. The grid itself was never pinned up, yet nothing could be placed without it. Time and direction are like that grid for events: they give each event its 'when' and 'where'.
Physics treats time and space very differently from this. Since Einstein, time is not one universal clock for everyone. Measured durations depend on motion and gravity, and time is bound up with space. Nyaya's single, shared, everywhere-present time fits everyday experience and Newton's picture better than relativity. Its insistence that time and direction are real, not mere labels, is a live debate: some philosophers hold that time is a feature of the world, others that it is a construct of the mind. Whether time had a beginning is also open in cosmology, so 'eternal' is a claim science cannot settle. Direction as east or north depends on where you stand, which modern thought also grants.
