The self is the seat of knowing. It is of two kinds: the supreme self and the individual self. Of these, the Lord is all-knowing and one alone. The individual self differs in each body, is all-pervading, and is lasting.
The question is simple: who is it that knows? Nyaya answers with the atman, the self, defined as the place where knowledge lives. It then sorts selves into two kinds. The paramatman, the supreme self, is Ishvara, the Lord, who knows everything and is only one. The jivatman is the individual self, one for each body. Annambhatta calls it vibhu, all-pervading, and nitya, lasting without beginning or end. His commentary, the Dipika, gives reasons. The self cannot be the body, since losing a hand would then destroy part of you. It cannot be the senses, since you recall 'I saw this, and now I touch it', and one sense cannot remember another's work. Selves are many because pleasure and pain differ from person to person. A tiny self could not feel all over the body. A middle-sized one would have a beginning and end, making deeds lose their fruit. The Dipika also argues for the Lord by inference: a sprout is an effect, so like a pot it has a maker.
Think of a lamp's light filling a house. Each house has its own lamp, so what is lit in one is not lit in another. Likewise each body has its own self, where knowing happens, while the single all-knowing Lord is like the one sun that lights every house at once.
Modern thought splits this claim. Neuroscience and most philosophy of mind link knowing, memory and feeling to the brain, not to a separate lasting self. The Dipika's point that a hand lost does not cost a person their identity fits ordinary medical experience, but a physicalist would answer that identity lives in the brain, not in a soul. The old puzzle of how one person unites experiences across time is still discussed, as the problem of personal identity, and the hard problem of consciousness remains open. Hume doubted any single self could be found beneath experience, and Buddhists pressed a similar view. The inference to a divine maker is a design argument, which Hume and Darwinian biology challenge, since natural processes now explain the structure of living things. Whether a creator exists is left to philosophy and faith, not settled by science.
