The mind is the instrument by which pleasure and the like are grasped. Since each self has its own, minds are without number. The mind is atom-sized, and it is lasting.
The question: when you feel joy or pain, what do you feel it with? Eyes see and ears hear, but nothing outer reaches a headache. The Nyaya school answers with manas, the mind, an inner instrument that takes in pleasure, pain and the like. Three claims follow. First, there is one mind per self. Verse 8 said selves are many, so minds are many too. Second, each mind is paramanu-sized, an atom, with no parts and no size. Third, it is nitya, lasting, not made or destroyed. The commentary, Annambhatta's Dipika, gives the reasoning for smallness. Suppose the mind were all-pervading. Then it would always be joined to the self, and knowing would arise all the time, with no gaps. Yet in deep sleep nothing is known. So the mind must be tiny and able to move. When it withdraws into the heart region, there is deep sleep. When it comes out and meets the self, knowledge arises. The Dipika also says the mind has motion and no touchable quality.
1. Tonight, lie down and notice the moment attention starts to loosen before sleep. Spend one minute just watching it drift. 2. Tomorrow, when a feeling of irritation or pleasure arrives, stop for ten seconds and name it silently before reacting. 3. Once today, pick one task and do only that for five minutes, noticing how attention moves from one thing to the next, one at a time.
The Nyaya picture of a tiny mind that visits one thing at a time has a loose echo in how psychology describes attention: it is narrow, serial and easily switched, and people cannot truly do two demanding things at once. The sleep argument is different. Modern medicine treats sleep as a state of the whole brain, with distinct stages, not a mind withdrawing to one spot, and the brain stays active in sleep. Nothing in neuroscience supports a mind-atom or a mind that is separate from the brain. Whether the mind is a separate thing at all remains open in philosophy of mind, where the hard problem of consciousness asks why any physical process is felt. Many Indian and Western thinkers disagree with Nyaya here, and Nyaya's own argument is a reasoned inference, not a measurement.
