Arjuna Loses His Bow

The story · English

Arjuna found the bodies of Krishna and Balarama and performed the funeral rites for them and for the rest of the slain. The eight queens of Krishna, Rukmini at their head, embraced Hari and entered the funeral fire. Revati embraced the body of Balarama and entered the fire too, and it was cool to her, glad as she was to be with her lord. When Ugrasena and Vasudeva heard all this, they entered the fire with Devaki and Rohini. Arjuna finished the rites for the Yadavas. Then he left the city with the people of Dwaraka and with Vajra, walking slowly, with thousands of Krishna's wives in his care.

When Krishna left the world of mortals, the Sudharman palace and the Parijata tree went up to heaven. On the very day Hari departed, the dark Kali age began. The ocean rose and flooded all of Dwaraka, except the dwelling of the lord of the Yadu line. The sea has never been able to wash that temple away, and Kesava lives there still. Whoever visits the shrine where Krishna played is freed from sin. Meanwhile Arjuna, son of Pritha, led his people on until he halted them in the Panchanada country, in a rich and fertile place. There robbers living nearby saw a crowd of widowed women and vast wealth guarded by one man.

Their greed was stirred. They gathered their rough bands and said, "This Arjuna is walking among us alone with his bow, carrying great wealth and bringing countless women whose husbands are dead. Shame on our strength if we let him pass. He is proud from the deaths of Bhishma, Drona, Jayadratha and Karna, and he knows nothing of simple villagers. Take your long thick staves. Why should we not raise our arms?" They rushed on the people with cudgels and clods of earth. Arjuna met them and said with scorn, "Go away, you wretches, who do not know what is right, if you do not want to die." They ignored his warning and began seizing the treasure and the women.

Arjuna went to string Gandiva, his heavenly bow that no one could withstand in battle. Though he strained, it stayed limp. He could not even remember the mantras of his divine weapons. Losing patience, he shot arrows as best he could, but they only scratched the skin. The shafts Agni had given him, which had never failed to destroy, were themselves destroyed, and against herdsmen they were his ruin. He tried to call back the strength of Krishna, by which his arrows had once killed mighty kings. That failed too. Peasants turned the arrows aside, or they flew wild of their marks. When the arrows were gone, he struck at the robbers with the tip of his bow.

They laughed at his blows. Before Arjuna's eyes the barbarians carried off all the women of the Vrishni and Andhaka families and went their way. Jishnu was deeply grieved and cried out, "Alas, I am deserted by my lord." At once the bow, the heavenly weapons, his chariot and his horses were gone, like a gift wasted on an unlearned Brahmin. He said, "How powerful is destiny. Without my glorious friend, base men have beaten me. These are my arms, this is my fist, this is my place, and I am Arjuna, yet without his help all of it is hollow. My courage and Bhima's strength were his work. It can be no other cause."

Arjuna then went to Mathura and made the Yadava prince Vajra king there. In a forest he found Vyasa, approached him and bowed down at his feet. The sage watched him for a while and said, "Why do I see you without your radiance? Have you sinned with a woman, or killed a Brahmin? Have you suffered some bitter disappointment? Have you eaten food meant for Brahmins, or taken a poor man's property? Has an evil eye fallen on you? And, what seems most likely, have you been beaten in battle by men beneath you?" Arjuna sighed deeply and told Vyasa every detail of his defeat.

He said, "Hari was our strength, our courage, our might and our brightness, and he has left us. Without our kind friend we are as weak as straw. He was the living force in my weapon, my arrow, my bow. When he looked on us, fortune, fame and wealth crowded round. By his power Bhishma, Drona, the king of Anga and Duryodhana were slain. Because of devotion to him, strong men died like moths in the flame of my valour, and now cowherds have beaten me. Gandiva, famed in the three worlds, was foiled by peasants' sticks. Krishna's whole household was carried off by men with staves. I am not surprised that I have lost my lustre. It is a marvel that I live."

Vyasa answered, "Do not grieve, my son. Time brings all beings through the same changes. Time brings forth and dissolves all creatures, and everything rests on time. Rivers, oceans, mountains, the earth, gods, men, animals and trees are all made and will all be destroyed by time. Krishna's great works were done to lift the earth's burden. Oppressed, she went to the assembly of the gods, and Janarddana, who is one with time, came down for that. That work is finished. All the kings are destroyed and nothing remained for him to do, so the lord has gone where he pleased. The strength of mortals is a gift of time. Time killed Bhishma and Karna, so why should time not bring your defeat?"

Vyasa went on, "In your good fortune Janarddana was your help. In your decline Kesava has favored your enemies. Who would believe you alone defeated the Kauravas, or that peasants defeated you? Both are the play of Hari. Now hear why the women were taken. Long ago the Brahman Ashtavakra stood in water for many years, meditating. Rambha, Tilottama and hundreds of nymphs, on their way to a festival on Meru, praised him. He offered them any boon. Some asked for the best of men as husband. Ashtavakra rose from the water, ugly and crooked in eight places, and they laughed aloud. Angry, he cursed them: 'You will get the first of males as husband, and afterward fall into the hands of thieves.' When they pleaded, he said they would finally reach the region of the gods."

"Those women, the wives of Kesava, fell to the barbarians through Ashtavakra's curse," Vyasa said. "You have nothing to regret. The lord of all has withdrawn your strength and splendor, so your own end is near. Whoever is born must die, every rise ends in a fall, every union in parting. The wise feel neither grief nor joy at this. Leave everything and go with your brothers to the holy forest. Tell Yudhishthira that tomorrow he and his brothers will walk the path of heroes." Arjuna told the other sons of Pritha all he had seen, suffered and heard, and gave them Vyasa's message. The sons of Pandu set Parikshit on the throne and went to the forest. So ends the account of Vasudeva's deeds, born in the line of Yadu."
