Krishna, helped by Baladeva, had destroyed demons and wicked kings for the sake of the earth. Together with Phalguna he had lifted her burden by the death of seven Akshauhini armies. Now only one task remained. Using a curse spoken by Brahmanas as his reason, he would bring about the end of his own Yadava race. Then he would leave Dwaraka, set down his mortal body, and return with all his emanations to his own realm as Vishnu. Maitreya asked how Janarddana did this, and how he gave up his human body. Parasara began the telling. At the holy place of Pindarika, some boys of the Yadu family saw three sages: Viswamitra, Kanwa, and the great Narada. The boys were proud of their youth, and fate was already moving them.

They dressed Samba, the son of Jambavati, as a woman. They led him to the sages, greeted them politely, and asked: "This woman is the wife of Babru and longs for a son. What child will she give birth to?" The sages had divine sight. They saw the mockery and were angry. They answered, "She will give birth to a club, and it will destroy the whole Yadava race." The boys ran to Ugrasena and told him everything. Some time later, just as foretold, an iron club came out of Samba's belly. Ugrasena had it ground to dust and thrown into the sea. There the particles of dust became rushes. One piece, shaped like a lance blade, could not be broken by the Andhakas. They threw it into the sea, and a fish swallowed it.

The fish was caught. The iron spike was taken from its belly, and a hunter named Jara took it. Krishna, the slayer of Madhu, knew all of this. He did not think it right to turn back what fate had set in motion. Then a messenger from the celestials came to him privately. He said, "Lord, Indra, the Viswas, Maruts, Adityas, Sadhyas and Rudras send me to you. More than a hundred years have passed since you came down to lift the earth's burden. The demons are destroyed. Let the immortals see their king in heaven again. Return if you wish. If not, stay as long as those who depend on you need." Krishna answered, "I know all this. But the earth is not free of her load until the Yadavas are gone. That will happen within seven nights."

Krishna went on: "Then I will give Dwaraka back to the ocean, destroy the race of Yadu, and go to the celestials. Tell them that I will give up my mortal body and come to them with Sankarshana. Jarasandha and the other tyrants are dead. A young man of the Yadu line is no lighter a burden than they were. When I have removed this weight, I will go to the heavenly mansions." The messenger bowed and rose along his heavenly path to the king of the gods. Soon Krishna saw omens on earth and in the sky, day and night, all pointing to the fall of Dwaraka. He told the Yadavas, "Look at these terrible signs. Let us go quickly to Prabhasa and try to turn them away."

Uddhava bowed to him and said, "Lord, tell me what I should do. It seems to me that you will destroy this whole race. These signs mean nothing less than its end." Krishna said, "By my favour, go by the heavenly road to the holy place Badrikasrama, on the Gandhamadana mountain, the shrine of Nara Narayana. Meditate on me there, and by my grace you will reach perfection. When I have wiped out the Yadu race I will go to Baikuntha. After I leave Dwaraka, the ocean will flood it." Uddhava obeyed and set out for the shrine. The Yadavas, with Krishna, Balarama and the others, climbed into swift chariots and rode to Prabhasa.

At Prabhasa the Kukkuras and Andhakas bathed. Then, urged on by Krishna, they began to drink liquor. As they drank, a fire of quarrelling started among them. Insults were the fuel. By the divine will they were consumed with rage, and they attacked one another with missiles. When those ran out, they pulled up the rushes growing nearby. In their hands the rushes turned hard as thunderbolts. Pradyumna, Syamba, Kritavarman, Satyaki, Aniruddha, Prithu, Vipathu, Charuvannan, Charuka, Akrura and many others struck one another down. Krishna came and tried to stop them. But each man thought he was taking the other side, and the fighting went on. Then Krishna, in anger, picked up a handful of rushes. They became an iron club, and he killed many of the Yadavas with it. The rest killed one another.

Before the eyes of Krishna's charioteer, his swift horses carried off the Jaitra chariot and ran into the sea. Krishna's discus, club, bow, quiver, conch and sword circled him, then flew away along the path of the sun. Soon no Yadava was left alive except Krishna and Daruka. They went toward Rama, who sat at the foot of a tree. A huge serpent was coming out of his mouth. It moved toward the ocean, honoured by saints and other great snakes. The ocean came with offerings to meet it, and the serpent, worshipped by all the snakes, entered the deep waters. Krishna saw that Baladeva's spirit had gone. He told Daruka, "Go to Vasudeva and Ugrasena. Tell them Balabhadra has departed and the Yadavas are destroyed. Tell them I will meditate and give up my body. Tell the people of Dwaraka the ocean will flood the city. Wait for Arjuna, and when he leaves, follow him. Ask him to protect my family. Then go to Hastinapur, and let Vajra be made king of the Yadu race."

Daruka bowed and walked around Krishna again and again. Then he left as he was told. He brought Arjuna to Dwaravati and made Vajra king. Krishna gathered the supreme spirit, which is one with Vasudeva, into himself, and the divine Govinda became one with all beings. Honouring the curse of Durvasas, he sat in meditation with one foot resting on his knee. Jara the hunter came, his arrow tipped with the blade of the iron club that had never been ground to dust. From far off he saw the foot and took it for part of a deer. He shot, and the arrow lodged in the sole. When he came close, he saw a four-armed lord. He fell at his feet and begged forgiveness: "I did this without knowing. I thought it was a deer. Pity me, I am burning with my crime. You are able to burn me up." Bhagavan said, "Do not be afraid, hunter. By my favour you will go to the region of the celestials." As he spoke, a heavenly chariot arrived, and the hunter rose in it to that region. Then Krishna united himself with his own spirit, pure, inexhaustible, inconceivable, unborn, undecaying, imperishable, and all-pervading, which is the one Vasudeva. He gave up his mortal body and all bond with the three qualities.
