Balarama Drags Hastinapur

The story · English
Maitreya asked Parasara to tell him more of Balarama's deeds. He had already heard how Balarama dragged the Yamuna, and he wanted another. Parasara said he would speak of Rama, who is the eternal, boundless Sesha, the one who holds up the earth. The story begins at a ceremony where Duryodhana's daughter was to choose her husband. Samba, the son of Jambavati, carried her off. Duryodhana, Karna, Bhishma, Drona and other great chiefs were furious at his boldness and went after him. They defeated Samba and took him prisoner.
When the Yadavas heard this, they were enraged at Duryodhana and his companions, and they prepared to fight. Baladeva stopped them. He was slurred with drink as he spoke. "I will go alone to the sons of Kuru," he said, "and at my request they will let Samba go." He went to Hastinapur but did not enter the city. He stayed in a grove outside it. Duryodhana and the others heard he had come and sent him a cow, fruits, flowers and water. Balarama accepted the gifts as custom required. Then he told the Kurus, "Ugrasena commands you to set Samba free."
The Kuru chiefs burned with anger at this. Bahlika and other friends of the Kauravas did not think the Yadu line had any right to kingship. They said, "What is this, Balarama? What Yadava gives orders to the Kurus? If Ugrasena commands us, we will take away the white umbrella he has seized, which belongs only to kings. You deserve our respect, so go. But Samba behaved badly, and we will not free him for Ugrasena or for you. Who ever heard of a servant commanding his master? Treating you as equals, with a seat and a meal, has made you proud. The gift today was a courtesy, not something you should have expected." They refused to free Vishnu's son and went back into their city.
Balarama, drunk and angry at their insults, struck the ground with his heel. It split open with a crash that rang through every direction. His eyes were red and his brow knotted. "What pride in such hollow, worthless men," he said. "Kings rule by destiny, theirs and ours alike, and destiny now lets them defy Ugrasena. Indra commands the gods, and Ugrasena holds the same authority. Shame on a pride that boasts of a throne. I will not go back to Dwaraka until the earth is rid of the sons of Kuru. Karna, Duryodhana, Drona, Bhishma, all of them, with their horses, elephants and chariots. Or I will take their whole city and throw it into the Bhagirathi." Then he drove the blade of his plough under the ramparts and pulled.
Hastinapur began to tilt. The Kauravas saw it and were terrified. They cried out, "Rama. Rama. Stop, hold back your anger and have pity on us. Here are Samba and his wife, given back to you. Forgive what we did, not knowing your power." They hurried out of the city and handed Samba and his wife to Balarama. Bhishma, Drona and Kripa calmed him. He bowed to them and said, "I am satisfied," and let go of the city. The city still bears the mark of that shock today. The Kauravas honored Samba and Balarama, then sent Samba home with his wife and her dowry.
