Defining a Cause
Tarka Sangraha, Guna 24
Meaning · English
A cause is what stands invariably just before the effect.
The question is simple: what makes something a cause of something else? The Nyaya school answers that a cause is whatever exists just before an effect and is always there when that effect arises. Annambhatta's own commentary, the Dipika, shows why each word is needed. Say only 'what comes before' and a donkey wandering past the potter's house would count as a cause of the pot. So the word 'invariably' is added. Say only 'invariable' and the effect itself might qualify, so 'before' is added. A third check follows. The colour of the threads is also present before the cloth, always. Yet the Dipika says it is not a cause in its own right, because it is known only along with the threads themselves. Space, likewise, is present before cloth, but it is already known as the cause of sound and needs no new role. A cause, then, is what invariably precedes and is not merely tagging along.
1. Pick one small event today, such as a cup going cold or a plant drooping. 2. Write down everything that happened just before it. 3. Cross out items that were present but only incidental, like the donkey at the door. 4. Circle what is always there when this event happens, and circle it only if it truly does the work.
Modern thought treats causation as a hard problem. Hume noted that we only ever observe one thing following another, never the binding force between them, so regular succession is all that experience gives. Nyaya's rule is close to this, and its extra clauses anticipate a real difficulty: mere regularity includes accidental companions, such as a barometer falling before a storm without causing it. Contemporary philosophy answers with counterfactuals (would the effect fail without this?), with interventions (change it and see), and with probabilistic models. Nyaya has no experimental method of that kind, relying on exclusion by reasoning. The rule also treats causes as necessary, while modern accounts allow causes that merely raise probability. How causation is best defined is still open.
