An experience that takes a thing to be of the kind it truly is, in the place where that kind really is, is true experience. For example, seeing silver as silver. That alone is called valid knowing. An experience that takes a thing to be of a kind that is absent from it is false experience. For example, seeing a shell as silver. That alone is called invalid knowing.

Annambhatta has just said that experience comes in two kinds, true and false. Now he defines each. The test is a match between what you take a thing to be and what it is. If you see silver and judge 'this is silver', and the thing really has silverness, the experience is yathartha, true to the thing. The Nyaya school calls that pramA, valid knowledge. If you see a shell and judge 'this is silver', you assign a kind the shell does not have. That is ayathartha, false experience, called apramA. The Dipika answers two objections. First, 'pot-ness in a pot' seems to fail, since pot-ness itself is not a pot. Annambhatta replies that wherever a relation holds, knowing that relation counts, and pot-ness does belong to the pot. Second, 'this has contact' seems to be wrongly caught as false. The Dipika says the test is applied in the same respect: contact is present at one part and absent at another, so judging contact where it is absent is mistaken, and judging it where it is present is correct. The school's claim: truth is fit between the content of a judgment and the thing.

1. Today, when you catch yourself saying 'that is X', pause for a few seconds and ask: does the thing really have the quality I just gave it? 2. Pick one quick judgment, such as a stranger's mood or a food's freshness, and check it against one more look or one more fact. 3. Note one case where you were wrong, and name what you had taken it to be and what it was.

Philosophers call this the correspondence theory of truth: a belief is true when it fits how things are. It is the everyday view, and it sits close to Aristotle and to much modern thinking, though rivals exist, such as coherence and pragmatic theories. The Nyaya's attention to the 'respect' in which a property holds is similar to the care modern logic takes with quantifiers and context. The shell-silver case is the classic illusion, and cognitive science agrees that perception actively guesses and sometimes misfires. What the definition does not settle is how you can tell, from inside, that your experience matches. Nyaya and modern epistemology both keep working on that question.
