The Rains and Lakshmana's Anger

The story · English

The solemn rite was over and Sugriva was king again, so the two sons of Raghu climbed the hill called Prasravana. Its streams ran fast, its slopes were thick with trees and creepers, and tigers, deer, bears and lions lived in its woods. High on its crest was a wide cave, and the brothers took shelter there. Rama turned to Lakshmana, who was always watching out for him, and said, "I love this cave. The air is fresh. Let's stay here through the rains. Look at the rocks, copper and black and white, the clouds hanging low, the peacocks calling, the jasmine scenting the wind. The cave faces north and east, and the hills behind will keep off the storms. There's even a great flat black stone lying at the door."

Rama went on. "Look at the stream running east past our cave, like the young Ganga. Lotuses float on it, blue and red, with white lilies among them. Swans and cranes crowd its islands, and holy hermits gather there. Kishkindha is close, so in the evenings the breeze will carry the singing and the drums when the vanaras dance. Sugriva has his wife and his kingdom back. How could he be anything but happy now?" So they settled there. But Rama could not find peace. He grieved for Sita, who was dearer to him than his life, and when the moon rose over the eastern hills he lay awake on his bed of leaves, crying without stopping, numb with sorrow.

Every pain Rama felt struck Lakshmana too, and he spoke to him gently. "Get up, brother, and be strong. You've grieved too long. Tears ruin even the greatest plans. How will you kill that cruel giant if you wear yourself out like this? You could shake the earth and its mountains loose. Will one demon stand against you? Wait out the rains. When the autumn sun dries the land, he and his whole kingdom will fall. I'm only trying to wake the courage your tears have put to sleep, the way oil poured in worship wakes a sleeping flame." Rama knew his brother was right. "You've spoken like a true friend," he said. "I'll put these thoughts away and wait until the rains end and Sugriva calls us to act. A man who is helped repays it."

Then the rains came. "Look," Rama said on the dark wooded slopes, "the clouds are piled up like mountains. They drank the sea, and now they're giving it back to the earth. The breeze off them is so cool you could cup it in your hands and drink it. The hills wear the clouds like the black deerskins of students at their lessons. And that lightning flashing through the dark cloud makes me think of Sita, struggling in the demon's arms." Soon the roads were washed out. "No king marches now," he said. "The lord of Kosala rests in his palace. Sugriva has his queen and his throne back. I have lost both, and I'm sinking like a riverbank under the flood. But I couldn't ask Sugriva to move in this. When he's rested, he'll remember what he owes me."

At last the lightning stopped and the sky was clear blue, with the full moon bright again. But Sugriva, lost in his pleasures, forgot his promise. He spent day and night with Ruma and with Tara, drinking and celebrating, and left the running of the kingdom to his courtiers. Then Hanuman, who knew the scriptures and how to choose his moment, came to him with careful words. "You've won your kingdom. Now your first care should be the friends who helped you. Don't wait until it's too late. Rama risked his life for you. He doesn't need your strength; his arrows could defeat the gods. He's only waiting to see you keep your word." Sugriva listened, and ordered Nila to call in every army from every quarter. "Any vanaras who isn't here within fifteen days," he said, "will die for it."

But Rama knew none of this. On a clear autumn night he sat on the mountain, under the silver moon, knowing Sugriva had given himself up to pleasure and that the time for action was slipping away. He heard the cranes cry and thought of Sita. "Where is she now, the woman whose voice was sweeter than birdsong? Does she look at the flowering trees and search for me?" Lakshmana came back from gathering fruit and found him drowning in grief. "Why give in like this?" he said. "Who could keep Sita from you for long?" Rama answered, "Four months of rain have gone, and they felt like a hundred years. Kings are marching to war now, but Sugriva sleeps and drinks. He looks down on me as a friendless beggar who has lost his kingdom."

"Go to him," Rama said, "and give him my message. Tell him the man who forgets the friend who helped him dies in disgrace, and dogs won't touch his body. Tell him the road Vali took to the god of death is still open. I shot one arrow and only Vali fell. If he breaks his word, I'll kill him and all his people. Then add whatever you think best." Lakshmana's anger flared. "If he's that blind, let him join his dead brother. Angada can lead the search." He picked up his bow. But Rama said gently, "Someone like you won't turn to wrongdoing. The man who can tame his anger is the real hero. Don't speak harshly. Use gentle words, and point out to Sugriva how he has failed us."

Lakshmana obeyed, but his brother's grief burned in him as he went. Trees fell as he passed and stones split under his feet. When the vanara chiefs at Kishkindha saw him, they grabbed boulders and trees, and that made him angrier, like oil on a fire. Then they saw his face, fierce as the god of death, and ran to the palace. Sugriva was with Tara in a far room and heard nothing. Lakshmana told Angada, "Tell the king I'm at the gate, and ask if he'll help his friend." Angada, shaking, carried the message to Sugriva and Ruma and touched Tara's feet, but Sugriva, dulled with wine, didn't stir. Only the roar of the frightened crowd woke him, eyes still red, a garland round his neck. The counsellors Yaksha and Prabhava urged him to go and bow his head.

Sugriva said, "I've done nothing to anger him. Maybe someone has slandered me." Hanuman answered plainly. "You've lost track of the seasons. Autumn has come, the sky is clear, and the time for war has arrived without you noticing. That's why Lakshmana is here. You were wrong, so go and ask for peace with joined hands." Lakshmana was invited in. He walked through a beautiful city of gardens and palaces, through seven courts, until he heard flutes and singing and the anklets of women. A flood of anger and shame came over him, and he twanged his bowstring so the sky rang. Then, out of modesty, he stepped back from the women's sight. Sugriva knew that sound and leapt up in fear. "Tara," he said, "go to him and calm him. A man like that is never harsh with a woman."

Tara went, and when Lakshmana saw her he bowed and his anger left him. "Your husband forgot the four months we agreed," he told her. "What are we to do?" She answered, "Forgive him. Love conquers everyone. And he's already sent for his armies." Lakshmana went in and found Sugriva on his throne beside Ruma. Sugriva sprang up with joined hands. Lakshmana said, "Brahma himself said there's atonement for drinking, for theft, for broken vows, but none for ingratitude. Rama made you king. Vali's road is still open." Tara said, "Don't speak to him like that. He hasn't forgotten. Vishvamitra once lost ten thousand years in love and thought it was a day. Vali said Lanka can't be taken by Sugriva alone, so he's gathering ten thousand thousand monkeys and bears." Lakshmana was won over. Sugriva threw down his garland, sober again. "I owe Rama everything," he said. "I'll follow him with all my legions. Forgive me." Lakshmana answered, "You deserve to be king. Come and comfort my brother. And forgive my harsh words, and Rama's."
