Vali gave no answer to Rama's words. Battered by trees and stones, struck down by Rama's arrow, he lay fainting on the ground, his breath growing ragged. Inside the vanara hall, word reached Tara that an arrow from Rama's bow had brought her husband down. She ran from her home with her son Angada beside her. Near the field of battle she met Angada's own vanaras coming the other way. They had seen Rama standing with his bow, and fear had turned them into a scattering herd of deer. Tara stopped them. "You who always stand around our king," she said, "where is your lion of a master? Why are you leaving him? Is he lying dead, a brother killed by a brother, or brought down by Rama's arrows from afar?"
"Turn back, Tara," they answered, "and save Angada, your son. Rama stands there like Death in disguise, and Vali is dying. He who hurled trees and rocks lies struck by an arrow like lightning. Let the chiefs gather and crown Angada king, or our enemies will force their way inside the walls." Tara heard them out. "What are wealth or a son or a kingdom to me," she said, "while my husband bleeds? I will go to the one who beat him and throw myself at his feet." She ran on, weeping and striking her head and breast. On the field she found him, the one whose roar had once terrified the bravest. She saw Rama resting a hand on his bow, with Sugriva and Lakshmana beside him. She passed them, reached Vali, and collapsed in the dust.
She rose as if from a sleep cut short, bent over him, and cried out. Sugriva, watching her and young Angada, could hardly bear it. Tara put her arms around her husband and spoke into his chest. "Glory of the vanaras, why do you lie on the cold ground and not answer me? A king should not sleep on bare earth. Do you love her more than me now? Are our days together over, the hours we spent in woods sweet with honey? You paid for everything today, for driving Sugriva out and keeping Ruma from him. I gave you good advice, for your sake and for our people, and you would not believe me. No, Sugriva did not beat you. Fate did. And does Rama feel nothing, he who struck you while you fought another?"
"What will become of Angada," she went on, "when his uncle turns stern? Come, child, look at your father one last time. Speak to him, my lord, kiss his face. Rama has paid his debt to Sugriva. Be happy, Sugriva, you have Ruma back." The other wives of Vali wept with her and pressed close to Angada. "How could you leave your son? If I ever hurt you without thinking, forgive me. I touch your feet with my head." Tara crept back and sat beside him on the ground. Then Hanuman came quietly near. "What we receive grows from seeds we sowed long ago," he said. "Your son is alive. Vali was kind, generous, patient, true. Let the rites be done, and let Angada, under your care, become king. When you see him on his father's throne, you will find rest."
Tara lifted her head and looked at him. "Touching my dead husband is sweeter to me than Angada or a hundred like him," she said. "A widow has no claim over Angada or the kingdom. Sugriva is his uncle. He must decide everything now. Do not ask of me what was never mine. All I want is to sit here and watch over Vali." Vali was still breathing, slowly and faintly. He opened eyes wet with the tears of death, looked at Sugriva, and spoke clearly. "Do not blame me for the wrongs I did you. Blame fate, which drove me on. We were never allowed to be happy at the same time, or to live side by side as brothers should. The kingdom is yours now. I am going to Yama's hall."
"One last favour, though it is not easy," Vali said. "This boy, dearer to me than life, lying here in tears. Keep him by you. Be his father and his guide, and give him everything I gave. Tara, daughter of Sushena, can read signs and see what is coming. Never brush aside her warnings. And keep your word to Rama, for breaking faith would be a grievous wrong. Take this golden chain, the gift of the gods, before its power dies with me." Sugriva took it, every thought of triumph gone from him. Then Vali turned to Angada. "In sorrow be strong, in joy be humble. Obey Sugriva. Never take his enemies for friends. Neither pester him nor hold back what is fair to ask." His eyes rolled, his teeth bared, and his spirit left him.
The vanara chiefs cried out. "With you gone, Kishkindha is desolate. You fought Golabh the Gandharva for fifteen years, day and night, and won. How could you fall?" Tara sank down beside him like a creeper clinging to a fallen tree. She kissed his face and held him. "You never listened to me, and now your bed is sand and stone. Your chiefs are weeping, Angada is weeping. Wake up. Foolish is the father who gives his daughter to a warrior. My heart must be stone, or it would have broken into pieces. You used to lie on crimson cushions, and now you lie in a pool of your own blood. I cannot even rest my head on your chest, the arrow is buried so deep in it." Then Nila drew the arrow out, and it flashed like a setting sun.
Blood poured from the wound like a mountain stream red with ore. Tara brushed the dust from Vali's hair, weeping, then called Angada. "Go, my child, salute your king." Angada wrapped his arms around his father's feet. "Father, here is Angada," he said. "Have you no blessing for him, no word at all?" Tara asked her husband. "Where is your golden chain? I begged you not to fight, and you would not listen. Angada and I will die with you." Seeing her grief, Sugriva wept and went to Rama. "You kept your promise," he said, "but I have no heart to rule. My brother cried, 'Go, I will not kill you,' and I sought his life out of hatred. He was good to his brother. I was fierce and greedy. Who will lift this sin from me?"
Rama, who felt the sorrow as they did, spoke gently. "Grief cannot bring the dead back. Fate governs every word and deed, and no strength or kinship can turn it aside. Vali kept to a warrior's duty, would not guard his own life, and is honoured in heaven. Stop weeping and do what must be done." Lakshmana told Sugriva to prepare dry wood, sandal, oil, perfume and rich cloth, and to have a litter brought with strong bearers. It came, painted and inlaid with golden birds, hung with jewels and flowers under a saffron canopy. Sugriva and Angada laid Vali on it, and the procession set out, gems thrown along the way, the widows crying, "My lord, my lord," until the hills echoed. On a sandy island in a clear mountain stream, Angada and Sugriva placed him on the pyre and lit it, then offered water to his spirit.
The councillors gathered around Sugriva while his clothes were still wet from the stream. Hanuman asked Rama to come into the city and seat Sugriva on the throne himself. "For fourteen years I may not enter a town or village," Rama said. "That was my father's word. Let Sugriva be crowned without delay, and let him make Angada his partner, for Angada is noble and true. The rains have begun, and they will last four months. Lakshmana and I will stay in a cave on this hill. When the month of Kartik clears the skies, we will begin the great task." Sugriva went into Kishkindha. Priests fed the sacred fire, and the vanara leaders poured holy water over him. Then Sugriva held Angada close and named him partner in his rule, and the bright city rang with praise for Rama and Lakshmana.
