Meaning · English
Light is my own nature; I am nothing apart from it. Whenever the world shines forth, I am that very shining.
Janaka is speaking to Ashtavakra, and he begins with one word: prakasha, light. It comes from a root meaning to shine forth, to make plain. Nijam rupam means own form, what a thing is when nothing is added to it. So the first line says that light is what Janaka is, and he is not something else that has light. The second clause follows: he is not other than that light. There is no leftover "me" standing apart from it. The second line turns to the world. Whenever the world shines, whenever a tree, a face or a thought appears, it appears by that light. Janaka names the light bhasa, shining. He says he is that shining. The world is not a second lamp, and it is not switched on by something outside him. The text teaches that everything seen is known only in awareness, and awareness is what Janaka finds himself to be. The question behind the verse is Janaka's own: what am I, now that I am free? He answers by pointing at what has been present in every experience, which is the knowing itself. The verse asks nothing of the listener beyond looking at where seeing happens.
A lamp stands in a dark room. The chair, the table and the far wall are visible only because its light falls on them. Nothing in the room shows apart from that light. The lamp is the self, the furniture is the world, and the showing is one act.
1. Tonight, when the room is dim, switch on one lamp and watch things come out of the dark. 2. Pick one object, a cup or a door, and look at it for half a minute. 3. Ask quietly what it is that is aware of the cup. Do not answer. Just notice the asking. 4. Do the same once tomorrow, in daylight, with a sound.
A mother wakes at night to a power cut and walks into the dark kitchen for water. Her hand finds the tap by memory. The room seems to have vanished, yet she is entirely there, aware, a little afraid. Then the light returns, and the cups and the clock appear again. In that moment, the verse points away from the things coming back and toward what was awake the whole time. She would see that the darkness and the lit kitchen were both known to the same her. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: what we notice depends on where our attention rests. The text teaches more than that. It says the knowing is what she is, and the world shines as that. This does not switch the lights on, ease her fear of the dark, or take the place of a doctor if she woke from pain or dizziness.
