Meaning · English

Through not knowing the self, the world appears; through knowing the self, it does not appear. Through not knowing the rope, a snake appears; through knowing the rope, it does not appear at all.

Three words carry the teaching. Ajnana is not-knowing: a, not, and jnana, knowing, from the root jna, to know. Bhati is appearing or shining, from bha, to shine. Rajju is a rope, and ahi is a snake. Janaka says the world shows up because the self is not known. When the self is known, the world stops showing up in that way. He gives the rope as proof. In dim light a coiled rope looks like a snake. The fear is real and the body jumps, but the snake was never there. Nothing had to be killed or driven off. Only the rope had to be seen. The text teaches the world the same way. It does not call the world a hoax. It says the world appears as something separate, solid and apart from oneself because the self is not recognised. Once the self is known, that appearance goes, as the snake goes when the rope is seen. Janaka says this because Ashtavakra has told him the self is the free witness, only waiting to be recognised. The verse answers how bondage arises at all: by a mistake of seeing, not by a real chain. It asks the listener to look for what has been misread, not for something to fight.

A coat hangs on a bedroom door in the half dark and looks like a person standing there. The heart jumps. Then the light comes on, and there is only a coat, which was always a coat. The self, not known, is like the coat misread. Seeing it plainly is what ends the fright.

1. Tonight, when you feel a small fear or irritation, stop for one minute and ask what exactly you are seeing, and what is actually there. 2. Say the plain facts aloud or on paper, in one or two sentences, without the story you added. 3. Notice whether the feeling changes when the facts are named. 4. Do this once a day for a week, and keep a short note of which pictures turned out to be ropes.

A man reads a message from the clinic: please come in to discuss your results. He sits up half the night. By two in the morning he has pictured the ward, the bills and his children at the funeral. None of it has happened. All he holds is one sentence. In the morning he reads the message again and sees it says nothing more than it says. The fear in his chest was real, and ordinary experience confirms that the body answers a pictured danger as it answers a present one. Now see what the verse changes, step by step. It points first to the picture, not the danger. It then says the picture is built from not seeing clearly. Finally it says that seeing clearly ends the picture without any fight. The text teaches this far beyond one night, of the whole appearance of the world. It does not promise that grief, illness or loss will not come. If the results are bad, they are bad, and a doctor is needed. The verse speaks to the extra fear added on top by misreading.
