Sweetness Through the Cane
Ashtavakra Gita 2.6
Meaning · English
As sugar is made within the cane juice and pervaded by it, so the world is made within me, and is pervaded by me without a break.
Two words carry this. Vyapta means pervaded, filled through, from vyap, to spread over. Nirantaram means without a gap, from antara, an interval. Together they say that nothing in the world is left outside the self, not even a thin seam. Janaka gives the picture of sugar and cane juice. Sugar is made of the juice, sits in the juice, and is nothing but the juice in another shape. So he says the world is made within him, and he fills it unbroken. Ashtavakra's teaching, which Janaka now speaks back in joy, is that the self is the witness in which all things appear. This answers Janaka's first question, how knowledge is won. It is won by seeing that nothing stands apart from the self to be known or gained. The verse does not call the world false. It says the world has no existence separate from the self, as sugar has none separate from juice. What it asks of the listener is to test this in their own seeing, and to notice where they still treat something as outside them.
A pot of cane juice is boiled down on a stove until pale crystals of sugar appear. Nothing was added from outside. The sweetness was in the juice all along and only took a solid shape. The world is the crystals, and the self is the juice.
1. Tonight, take a small spoon of sugar or a piece of jaggery and taste it slowly, for about a minute. 2. While it melts, remember that it began as juice pressed from cane. Nothing else went into it. 3. Then look at one ordinary thing in the room, a cup or a wall, and ask quietly what it is made within. 4. Stay with the question for a minute, without hurrying to an answer.
A man stands at the kitchen door at night, watching his teenage daughter pack to leave for a hostel in another city. She feels, to him, like something going out of his life. The verse speaks to that moment. Janaka's teaching is that nothing, not even a loved person walking away, lies outside the self that sees. Step by step: he notices the ache and that it is his own. He notices that the seeing of her, the fear, and the pride all appear in one awareness, his. He then helps her fold clothes with a steadier hand, because he is no longer grasping at someone slipping from a space he thought he owned. The limit is plain. The verse does not shorten the missing, and it does not make the parting painless. Ordinary experience confirms only that a person who is less gripped by fear often listens and speaks more kindly.
