Meaning · English

Perception is the knowledge born from contact between a sense organ and an object. It is of two kinds: without distinctions and with distinctions. Knowledge that has no qualifying feature is the first, as in 'this is something'. Knowledge that has a qualifying feature is the second, as in 'this is Dittha', 'this is a brahmin', 'this is dark', 'this is a cook'.

The question is simple: what is perception, and does it come all at once or in steps? Annambhatta first defines it. Perception is knowledge produced by contact between a sense organ, such as the eye, and an object, such as a pot. Then the school, Nyaya, splits it in two. The first stage is nirvikalpaka, knowledge without distinctions. You are aware of something, but not yet of what it is: just 'this is something'. The second is savikalpaka, knowledge with distinctions. Now the thing is tied to a name, a class, a quality or an action: 'this is Dittha', 'this is a brahmin', 'this is dark', 'this is a cook'. The Tarka-dipika adds a reason for the first stage. Knowing 'a cow' means knowing a thing as qualified by cowness, and that needs the quality known beforehand. If that earlier knowledge were also qualified, it would need an earlier one, and so on without end. So there must be a bare first grasp, with no qualifier, to stop the chain.

1. Next time something unfamiliar catches your eye, such as a bird or a tool, pause for two seconds before naming it. Notice that you see it first. 2. Then name it, and notice the second step: the label, the kind, the quality. 3. Once today, look at a familiar object for ten seconds and list only what you see, such as colour and shape, without calling it anything.

Cognitive science and philosophy of perception also separate raw sensory registration from recognition and categorising. Psychologists describe a quick, unlabelled early stage of vision followed by identification. Philosophers argue over whether any experience is truly free of concepts. Kant and later thinkers hold that perception is already shaped by concepts, which is close to the Buddhist and Vedanta debates with Nyaya here. Nyaya's argument is a regress argument from logic, not a laboratory finding, and it is not tested the way a brain study is. Whether a pure, conceptless stage can be experienced, rather than only inferred, remains open. The two-stage picture is a useful map, not a settled fact.
