In perceiving an absence, the link is the relation of qualifier and qualified. In 'the floor has the absence of a pot', the eye is joined to the floor, and the pot's absence qualifies that floor.

The question: you glance at a floor and know there is no pot on it. Nyaya, the school of logic, holds that perception needs a contact between a sense organ and its object. An absence is nothing, so what could the eye touch? Annambhatta answers with a sixth kind of contact, called viseshana-visesya-bhava, 'being qualifier and qualified'. The eye is joined to the floor by ordinary contact. The absence of the pot is a qualifier, a feature of that floor, as a stick is a feature of the man who carries it. Seeing the floor as so qualified is seeing the absence. The commentary, the Dipika, adds the reasoning. Had a pot been there, it would have been seen as the floor is seen. It is not seen, so it is not there. This removes the need for a separate means of knowing for absences, which other schools allow. The Dipika adds that the relation is nothing extra: it is just the floor and the absence themselves.

1. Tonight, glance at a table or shelf you know well and say aloud what is not on it, such as your keys or a cup. 2. Notice that you are looking at the surface itself, and the missing thing shows up as a fact about that surface. 3. Before you declare something missing, ask whether it would be visible if it were there. A pot on an open floor would be. A coin in a closed drawer would not.

Cognitive science treats noticing what is missing as a real perceptual act. The brain predicts what a scene should contain and registers a mismatch, much as the Dipika's 'it would have been seen had it been there'. Nyaya's insistence on that condition matches a sound rule: absence of evidence counts only where the evidence would have appeared. Modern formal logic handles negation as a statement, not as something perceived, so the debate moves to philosophy of mind and perception. Whether an absence is a real feature of the world or a fact about our expectations is still disputed. Bhatta Mimamsa and Advaita Vedanta, unlike Nyaya, give non-perception its own separate means of knowing.
