Expectancy, fitness and nearness are the causes of knowing a sentence's meaning. Expectancy is a word's failure to give a connected sense without another word. Fitness is the sense not being contradicted. Nearness is words uttered without delay.
The question is how separate words add up to a sentence that tells us something. The Nyaya school, which Annambhatta follows, says that hearing the words is not enough. Three conditions must hold. Akanksha, expectancy, is the gap a word leaves: "bring" alone is unfinished and calls for something to be brought, so it needs a partner word to complete a connected sense. Yogyata, fitness, means the intended sense is not contradicted, so the words can really go together. Sannidhi, nearness, means the words come without delay, so their meanings can be held in mind together. The Dipika commentary adds two points. It says the sutra means the knowledge of these three, since otherwise a mistaken impression of them could not produce a mistaken understanding of a sentence, and people do misunderstand. It also says speaking is named only because it serves nearness: what matters is that the meanings arrive in the mind without delay.
1. Today, when a message or sentence confuses you, ask which gap it has: a missing partner word, a pairing that cannot be true, or parts that arrived too far apart. 2. Before sending a text or email, read it once and check that each sentence is complete and that its words fit together. 3. When explaining something aloud, finish one thought before starting the next, so your listener holds the pieces together.
Linguistics meets this idea at several points. Expectancy resembles what grammarians call valency: a verb like "give" demands a giver, a gift and a receiver. Fitness resembles the study of meaning constraints, where a sentence can be grammatical yet absurd, as in Chomsky's colourless green ideas. Nearness has a counterpart in working memory, since a listener must keep earlier words active while later ones arrive. Modern logic also separates form from truth, which these three conditions mix together. Nyaya's list, however, is a short account of a listener's understanding, not a full grammar. It says nothing about context, tone or implied meaning, which pragmatics studies today. How the mind actually combines words remains an open research question.
