Past and Future Are Real
Yoga Sutras 4.12
Meaning · English
Past and future exist in their own nature. They differ only because the properties of a thing move along different paths of time.
Three words carry this sutra. Svarupa is own-form: what a thing is in itself. Dharma is a property, a quality a thing can carry. Adhva is a path or way, here the path of time. Bheda is difference. Plain sense: Patanjali says what is past and what is yet to come are not empty. Each has its own form. They are told apart only by the path their properties are on. A property that has passed is on one path, one that has not yet shown is on another, and one that is showing now is between them. Why say it? The surrounding chapter asks how the mind's impressions and the things it knows can carry on across time. If the past were nothing, and the future were nothing, nothing could carry over. So Patanjali says that they are not nothing. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, reads it this way: a property that has gone by or has not yet come still exists in its own form, in a latent state, and only the present one is manifest. Nothing arises from nothing. The later commentators work out the same point in finer detail. Note the limit. The sutra speaks of properties, the things the mind-field holds and shows. It does not speak of the seer.
A railway line has stations behind the train, stations ahead and the one at the platform. All of them are on the line the whole time. Only the train's position makes one past, one future and one present. Properties of the mind sit on time's line the same way.
1. Once today, when a memory or an old habit of mind comes up unasked, stop for a moment and say silently: this was there already, and now it is showing. 2. Before you plan something for tomorrow, spend one minute noticing that the plan already exists in your mind in some form, not yet shown. 3. In the evening, sit for three minutes and notice which thoughts are present now and which seem to wait behind them. Only notice. Do not try to move them.
