Meaning · English

As the image in a mirror lies within the glass and all around it, so the Supreme Lord is within this body and all around it. As one space is inside a pot and outside it, so Brahman, constant and without a gap, is in the whole company of beings.

Four words carry it. Parameshvara is the Supreme Lord: parama, highest, and ishvara, ruler. Brahman comes from brih, to grow vast, and names the limitless itself. Vyoma is space. Ghata is a pot. Nirantaram means without a gap: nir, without, and antara, an interval. Ashtavakra gives two pictures. A reflection has the mirror behind it and the glass around it, so it is nowhere the mirror is not. In the same way, he says, the Lord is inside this body and around it. Then he turns to space. One space fills the pot and surrounds the pot. The clay wall gives the pot its shape but does not cut space in two. Brahman, he says, is constant, never coming or going, and unbroken through the whole crowd of beings. Every creature is a pot, and the same one fills each. Why say it here? Janaka asked how freedom is won, and Ashtavakra has been telling him that he is the witness, already whole. A worry follows. If the self is not the body, where is it, and is it split among many bodies? The answer is that it is neither enclosed nor divided. The body is a boundary of shape only. Nothing inside is separate from what is outside. The teaching asks the listener to see that the line of the skin is not a line in what he is.

A sponge lying on the seabed is full of sea, and the sea is all around it. Water inside, water outside, and no wall of its own between them. The sponge is the body, with its small walls and holes. The sea is the Lord, filling it and surrounding it alike.

1. Today, stand in a doorway for one minute. Notice that the air in the room and the air outside are the same air; the door divides rooms, not air. 2. Rest a hand on your chest and think: this body sits inside what also surrounds it. 3. Later, when you pass a stranger on the street or in a shop, say silently: the same inside, the same around. Let it last a few breaths, then carry on.

A daughter sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning, waiting for word on her father's surgery. She feels sealed inside her own skin, with everyone else far off behind closed doors. The teaching speaks to that sealed feeling. It says the body is a boundary of shape only, and that the Lord is within her and around her, as space is in and around a pot. The same holds for the man on the table and for the nurse passing with a chart, since the text teaches one Brahman in the whole company of beings. The lonely line between her and them can loosen in how she holds it. She can sit, breathe, and speak to the nurse as someone who shares the corridor with her. Ordinary experience bears out that fear shrinks the world to one worried person, and that a kind word across a room widens it again. The teaching does not promise that the surgery goes well, and it does not take the fear away. It is no substitute for the surgeon's skill or the care of the ward.
