Shape Passes, Stillness Stays
Ashtavakra Gita 1.18
Meaning · English
Know that whatever has form is untrue, and the formless alone is steady. By being taught this truth, there is no further return to birth.
Two words carry the verse. Sakara means having a form, an outline, a shape. Niraakara means without form. Anrita means not true, from a, not, and rita, the real order of things: here it names what does not hold. Nishchala means unmoving, from nish, without, and chal, to shake. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that whatever has a shape is not true in the sense that it does not last. Bodies, thoughts, moods, the room, the crown: all have outlines, and all change. The formless is what does not move while they change. The text means the awareness in which they appear, the witness Janaka is. Then comes the reason it is taught. Janaka asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that seeing this difference is enough. Punarbhava means becoming again, rebirth. The text says that one who takes in this teaching has no return to it. The verse asks the listener to stop resting their weight on what has a shape, and to notice what was never shaken.
Think of a cinema screen while a film runs. Storms, crowds and fires cross it, and each scene ends. The screen is never wet, burnt or crowded. The scenes are what has form and passes. The screen is the formless, which stays still beneath all of it.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with the lights low and name three things you can see or hear. Each has a shape. 2. Then ask: what is aware of these? Stay with that question without answering it. 3. Tomorrow, when a mood turns up, say quietly, "this has a shape and it is passing." Notice what is watching it come and go.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning, waiting for news of his father's operation. His thoughts keep taking shapes: the worst outcome, an old quarrel, the sound of the lift. Each one feels solid while it lasts. The verse would work step by step. First he sees that each picture arrives and leaves, and that none stays the same for a full minute. Then he sees that something is aware of all of them and is not itself any one of them. Ashtavakra teaches that this is the steady part, and that he is it. He may find that the fear is still there, but he is no longer wholly inside it. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a feeling named plainly tends to loosen its grip a little. The verse does not promise the operation will go well. It does not remove grief, and it does not replace the surgeon, the nurse or the doctor who is needed. It speaks to where he stands while he waits.
