By you this whole world is pervaded, and in you it is strung, just as it really is. You are pure awareness by nature. Do not sink into smallness of mind. Be without expectation, without change, without burden, cool at heart. Be of unfathomable understanding, unshaken, with awareness alone as your dwelling.
Four words carry the teaching. Vyapta means pervaded, filled through as water fills a sponge. Prota means strung, like beads on a cord. Kshudrachitta is a small mind: kshudra is petty or tiny, chitta is the thinking mind. Chinmatra is awareness only: chit is awareness, matra is nothing but. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the world is filled by him and strung on him, so he is not a small figure standing inside it. His real nature is clean awareness, and the words 'as it truly is' say this is a plain fact, not a mood. The warning against a small mind follows from that. To think of himself as a body with a short list of troubles is to shrink what he is. Then comes a run of cooling words. Without expectation means not leaning toward what might come. Without change means the awareness does not alter with the events it lights. Without burden and cool at heart describe a mind that has put its load down. Unfathomable understanding is depth with no bottom. Janaka asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that nothing needs winning, because he is what everything rests on. The text asks Janaka to make awareness his dwelling place, the home he returns to.
A cinema screen shows a burning house, then a flood, then a wedding. Through all of it the cloth stays dry, uncut and unmoved, and every scene needed it to appear at all. Janaka's awareness is the screen, and the world and its troubles are the pictures.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with the lights low and let the day's events replay without steering them. 2. When one scene pulls at you, a sharp word or a worry, ask what in you is watching it. 3. Rest your attention on that watching instead of the scene, and notice that it is not tired, angry or afraid. 4. When you drift back into the story, return the same way. Do this each evening for a week.
A taxi driver sits in a flooded lane at midnight. His last fare has cancelled, the meter is dead, and the rent is due tomorrow. His chest is tight and his thoughts shrink to one word: ruined. The verse speaks to that narrowing. Ashtavakra's teaching is that he is not the tight chest or the word, but the awareness in which both appear. Step by step: he notices the tightness as something seen. He notices the thought 'ruined' as a thought, not the whole weather. Then what remains is plain, a wet road, a phone, a few calls he can make. The text calls this coolness of heart, a mind with its load set down and room to act. Ordinary experience agrees that panic makes the mind small, and that a steadier mind sees more options. The verse does not promise the rent will be paid, the water will drop or the fear will never return. It does not take the place of money, help from others or a doctor where one is needed. It says only what the driver is, underneath the trouble.
