Striving Is Bondage
Ashtavakra Gita 1.15
Meaning · English
You are without attachment, without action, shining by your own light, untouched by any stain. This very thing is your bondage: that you keep practising samadhi.
Ashtavakra gives four descriptions of Janaka and then a warning. Nihsanga means without attachment. Sanga is clinging, from a root meaning to stick, so the word says nothing in you sticks to anything. Nishkriya means without action: the witness does not do, it only sees. Svaprakasha means self-luminous. A lamp needs no second lamp to be seen, and awareness needs nothing else to make it known. Niranjana means unstained. Anjana is soot or eye-paint, so the word means no smudge has ever settled on it. Then comes the sharp turn. Samadhi, from a root meaning to put together, is the settling of the mind into steadiness. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that practising it is the bondage. Janaka asked how freedom is won. The text answers that it is not won, because the self was never bound. Anyone who sets out to achieve a state has already agreed he is not free yet, and that agreement is the knot. Practice also makes a doer, and the self was just named as actionless. The teaching asks Janaka to stop treating freedom as a task and to recognise what is already so.
A man hunts through every room for his glasses while they sit on his forehead. Each new search only proves, to him, that they are lost. The glasses are what you already are, the hunt is the practice, and the hunt is what keeps him from noticing.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a chair with nothing to achieve: no counting, no stilling of thoughts. 2. When you catch yourself trying to get somewhere, such as calmer or clearer, name it quietly: "trying". 3. Notice who is aware of the trying. That watcher needs no effort to be there. 4. Stand up without grading the five minutes.
A retired schoolteacher sits on his cushion at dawn, annoyed with himself. His mind has wandered again, and he scolds himself for failing at stillness. Now he carries two loads: the restlessness and the verdict on it. The verse speaks to the second load. It says the one who sees the wandering has not wandered, and has no stain from it. So he can see the restlessness, the scolding and the wish to succeed as things that appear before an awareness that stays as it was. The effort to get somewhere can drop, since nothing in him needs repairing before he is free. Ordinary experience bears out a small part of this: lying in bed trying hard to fall asleep tends to keep a person awake. The verse does not promise the restlessness will cease, and it does not remove grief or worry. Where sleeplessness, low mood or anxiety are heavy and persistent, a doctor is the right person to see.
