Waking From Delusion

Ashtavakra Gita 18.1

Meaning · English

At whose dawning of knowing, delusion becomes like a dream: to that, whose one form is happiness, the peaceful, the shining, a bow.

Ashtavakra opens the chapter with a bow, and the bow says what he is about to describe. Four words carry it. Bodha is knowing, from budh, to wake. It means the way you know on waking, not the way you know a fact. Bhrama is delusion, from a root for wandering or spinning: the mind going round in a mistake. Sukha is happiness, and ekarupa means having one form only. Shanta is quiet, settled, from a root for coming to rest. Tejas is brilliance, light. The first clause says that when knowing dawns, delusion becomes like a dream. A dream is not destroyed by argument. It is seen through on waking, and it loses its hold. The second clause bows to that which has happiness as its only form, and is peaceful and shining. Ashtavakra names this the self. Happiness is not something it gets or loses. It is what it is. The reason he begins here is Janaka's question: how is freedom won? The answer he has been giving is that nothing needs winning, only waking. The bow honours what wakes and what is woken to, and they are the same.

At night a coat hanging on a door looks like a stranger standing there, and the heart jumps. Someone switches on the light and the stranger is gone. The coat was never moved. Delusion is the stranger, knowing is the light, and the peaceful self is the plain room that was there all along.

1. Tonight, when you wake from a dream or a restless thought, stay still for one minute before reaching for your phone. 2. Notice the moment when you see that it was only a dream or only a thought, and how the fear loosens without anything being fixed. 3. Once this week, when a worry grips you, ask quietly whether you are inside a dream of it right now. Then notice what is still here: breathing, the room, the quiet beneath the worry.

A man wakes at three in the morning from a dream in which he has lost his job and cannot pay the rent. His heart is pounding and his hands are damp. Then he sees the ceiling, hears the fan, and knows it was a dream. Nothing was fixed or argued away. The fear drops because he woke, and the dream's story is seen as a story. The verse speaks of that kind of change, which comes from seeing, not from effort. Ashtavakra teaches that the whole spinning of the mind is like this, and that the self which sees it is already peaceful. Ordinary experience confirms only the small part: a mind that sees its fear as a thought grips less tightly. The verse does not promise that the real rent is paid, that grief lifts, or that a body in a panic needs no care. A person whose nights are often like this should see a doctor, and the verse does not stand in for one.
