The story · English
One day, Krishna traveled to Indraprastha to visit the Pandavas. He arrived accompanied by Satyaki and other companions. When the Pandava brothers saw the Lord of the Universe approaching, they rose as one, as the senses rise when the chief life-breath returns. They embraced Krishna with deep affection, gazing at his smiling face with pure joy. Krishna touched the feet of Yudhishthira and Bhima and embraced Arjuna, and Nakula and Sahadeva bowed to him. Krishna took the seat of honor, and the young Draupadi, though shy, approached him to offer her respects. Satyaki and the others were also honored before they settled into their seats to begin their reunion.
Krishna then approached Kunti, whose eyes grew moist with longing. He asked after her well-being and that of her daughter-in-law, and she asked him about his relatives. Overcome with emotion, her voice choking with tears, Kunti recalled the many hardships they had endured. 'Our welfare came the very moment you remembered us, your kin, and sent my brother, Krishna,' she told him. 'Through you we have a protector. You dwell in the hearts of those who remember you and destroy their suffering.' Yudhishthira said, 'What good have we done, Lord, that we see you, whom even the lords of yoga rarely see?' At the king's request, Krishna stayed in Indraprastha through the months of the rainy season, a joy to the eyes of its people.
Later, Arjuna and Krishna set out for a great forest, riding in a chariot with a monkey-banner. Arjuna carried his bow, Gandiva, and his quiver of inexhaustible arrows. They entered a wilderness teeming with tigers and deer, and Arjuna began to hunt. He shot tigers, boars, buffaloes, and various other animals. Once the hunt was finished and Arjuna was exhausted, they stopped at the Yamuna to drink its clear water. There, they spotted a beautiful young woman walking nearby. Arjuna, acting as Krishna's messenger, approached her and asked, 'Who are you, fair one? Where do you come from and what is your purpose here? I suspect you are seeking a husband; tell me everything.'
The woman replied, 'I am Kalindi, the daughter of the Sun god. I have lived in the waters of the Yamuna in a house built by my father, waiting for the sight of Achyuta. I desire none other as my husband than the venerable Vishnu, and I am performing great austerities to win him.' After hearing this, Arjuna told Krishna, and the Lord took Kalindi into his chariot and brought her to King Yudhishthira. During this time, Krishna also had the divine architect Vishvakarma build a magnificent and wondrous city for the Pandavas. Then, with Krishna as his charioteer, Arjuna gave the Khandava forest to Agni to burn, and the pleased Agni gave him a bow, white horses, a chariot, two inexhaustible quivers and armor that no weapon could pierce.
Krishna returned to Dvaraka with Satyaki and others and married Kalindi on an auspicious day and star. Mitravinda, daughter of his father's sister Rajadhidevi, loved Krishna, but her brothers Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti, followers of Duryodhana, forbade her to choose him at her svayamvara, so he carried her off by force as the kings looked on. In Kosala, to win Satya, the daughter of King Nagnajit, Krishna had to capture seven fierce bulls; he expanded himself into seven forms and bound them with ropes. He also married Bhadra, daughter of his father's sister Shrutakirti, given to him by her brothers led by Santardana, and Lakshmana, the daughter of the King of Madra. Krishna had thousands of such wives, among them the women he freed after killing the demon Bhauma, who had imprisoned them.
