The story · English
Indra came and told Krishna that Naraka, son of the Earth, had taken the umbrella, Aditi's earrings and Indra's place on the mountain of the gods. So Krishna set out for the city of Pragjyotisha, mounted on the great bird Garuda with Satyabhāmā by his side. The city was a fortress, shielded by mountains, weapons, and barriers of fire, water, and wind. Most formidable were the sharp nooses created by the demon Mura that encircled the place. Krishna did not hesitate; he used his mace to shatter the mountains and his arrows to break the weapon-forts. With his discus he sliced through the fire, water and wind, and with his sword through Mura's nooses, while the thunderous sound of his Panchajanya shell broke the spirit of the enemy. The sound was so terrifying it felt like the end of the age, waking the five-headed demon Mura from his slumber in the waters.
Mura rose like a scorching sun, wielding a trident and attempting to swallow the three worlds with his five mouths. He lunged at Garuda, but Krishna countered with arrows of immense power. When Mura threw his mace in a rage, Krishna shattered it into a thousand pieces. With an effortless motion of his discus, he severed the demon's five heads. Mura fell headless into the water, like a mountain whose peaks Indra's thunderbolt had cut away. Seeing their father dead, Mura's seven sons—Tamra, Antariksha, Shravana, Vibhavasu, Vasu, Nabhasvan, and Arun—came out, sent by Naraka, with the commander Pitha at their head, and rained down arrows, maces, and spears upon the Lord, but Krishna cut their weapons to pieces and sent them all to the abode of Yama.
The battle shifted to Naraka, who emerged from the city with a host of elephants from the ocean. Seeing Krishna upon Garuda, Naraka hurled a Shataghni at him, but Krishna cut down his army. Naraka then struck Garuda with the spear that had once repelled Indra's thunderbolt, yet Garuda did not tremble, like an elephant struck with a garland. As Naraka prepared to strike with a trident, Krishna acted first, using the razor-sharp edge of his discus to cut off his head, which fell shining to the earth with its crown and earrings. Cries of 'Alas!' and 'Well done!' rose, and the sages and gods showered Krishna with garlands. Then Bhumi, the Earth goddess, approached him. She offered him the earrings shining with refined gold and jewels, the Vaijayanti garland, Varuna's umbrella and a great jewel, bowing before him in deep devotion.
Bhumi prayed, 'I bow to you, O Lord of lords, wielder of the shell, discus, and mace. You are the primordial seed, the complete knowledge, and the soul of all beings. I, the earth, with water, fire, air and sky, the subtle elements, the gods, mind and senses, the doer and the great principle, all that moves and all that is still—to see these as separate in you, who are one without a second, is illusion. Naraka's son has come in fear to your lotus feet; protect him, and place on his head your lotus hand that takes away all sin.' Krishna granted fearlessness and entered Naraka's palace. There, he found sixteen thousand princesses who had been captured. Upon seeing Krishna, these women were instantly enchanted. In their hearts, they each prayed to the Creator, 'May this man become my husband,' longing for a union granted by divine grace.
Krishna sent the captured princesses to Dwārakā in clean garments and palanquins, with great treasuries, chariots, horses, and sixty-four swift white four-tusked elephants of Airavata's line. He then went to Indra's heaven and returned the earrings to Aditi. Urged by Satyabhāmā, he uprooted the celestial Parijata tree, set it on Garuda, defeated the gods and Indra—who had just touched his feet with his crown to beg his help—and brought it to his own city for Satyabhāmā's garden. Then, in one and the same moment, Krishna took as many forms and married all sixteen thousand women, each in her own palace. Krishna, whose path even Brahmā and the gods did not know, lived with each wife, enjoying their love and conversation. Though each had hundreds of maidservants, the women served him themselves with devotion, attending to his needs with perfumes and garlands, finding complete fulfillment in their husband.
