The Divine Play of Krishna and Rukmini

The story · English

In a room adorned with strings of pearls and jasmine flowers, where the air was sweet with the scent of the Parijata forest, Krishna sat comfortably on a white couch like the foam of milk. Rukmini, the princess of Vidarbha, attended to him with devotion. She held a fan in her hand, her fingers encircled by rings, and her anklets tinkled softly as she moved. Her beauty was radiant, her chest draped in fine cloth and marked with the red hue of saffron. Her husband, the Lord of the Universe, looked upon her, whose only refuge was he, and smiled with pleasure.

Suddenly, Krishna decided to play a trick on her. He looked at her and spoke with a coldness she had never known. 'Princess, you were desired by kings with the power of the world-guardians,' he said. 'Your brother and father promised you to Shishupala; why did you refuse him and the other kings who came for you, and choose me, who am not your equal? We, fearing the kings, took refuge in the ocean and mostly gave up our thrones. We are simple people, and we love those who have nothing. Without thinking ahead, you chose us; it is time you find someone suitable for your rank, a great warrior of the Kshatriyas.'

He went on teasing: Shishupala, Shalva, Jarasandha, Dantavakra and her own brother Rukmi hated him, and he had carried her off only to crush the pride of those kings. He was indifferent, he said, wanting no wife, children or wealth, content in himself. Rukmini was devastated. Hearing these unexpected and harsh words, she trembled with fear and grief. She stood with her face down, scratching the ground with her foot, unable to speak, her tears falling like rain upon her saffron-stained breasts. Her mind went blank with sorrow, and the fan slipped from her hand. She fainted, her body falling like a plantain tree struck by the wind, her hair scattered.

Seeing his beloved in such pain, Krishna’s heart melted. He realized the depth of her love and felt a surge of compassion. He quickly rose from the couch and lifted her up. With his lotus-like hands, he gathered her hair and wiped her face, her tear-filled eyes and her breasts wet with grief. He embraced her warmly and comforted her, revealing that his words were merely a joke. He told her, 'Do not be displeased with me, Rukmini. I know you are devoted to me. I only played this game because I wanted to hear your voice and see your face, lips trembling in loving anger, eye-corners reddened and brows in a frown.'

Rukmini, realizing she was safe, smiled shyly and replied, turning each of his charges around. He lay in the ocean as the Self, as if afraid of the gunas; he had nothing because nothing existed apart from him, and even Brahma brought him tribute. The kings were beasts, and husbands of that kind no better than donkeys, oxen, dogs or cats; he had taken her from them as a lion takes its share, and she had chosen him as truly fit for her. Krishna praised her fidelity, recalling the secret message she had sent him by a brahmin. So the Lord of the Universe enjoyed this domestic play like a householder among men.
