The Sons of Krishna and the Conflict with Rukmi

Bhagavata Purana 10.61 · read aloud in the app

The story · English

Each of Krishna's queens bore him ten sons, none of them inferior to their father, and each queen, seeing him never leave her palace, thought herself his dearest. His wives, though captivated by his lotus-like face and graceful arms, found that their own charms and romantic glances could not conquer the mind of the Lord. They served him with deep affection; though each had hundreds of maidservants, the queens served him with their own hands—washing his feet, offering betel leaves, and tending to his hair and sleep. Among these children were the sons of Rukmini, including Pradyumna, and the ten sons of Satyabhama, such as Bhanu and Subhanu. There were also the sons of Jambavati, like Samba and Sumitra, and those born to Nagnajiti, Kalindi, Madri, Mitravinda, Bhadra and Rohini, creating a vast lineage of tens of millions of grandchildren.

The King once asked how Rukmi, the brother of Rukmini, had given his daughter in marriage to Krishna's son, considering the deep enmity between Rukmi and Krishna. The King added that yogis see past, present and future perfectly, so the sage could surely tell him. Rukmi's daughter Rukmavati had chosen Pradyumna at her svayamvara, and Pradyumna defeated the assembled kings and carried her off on a single chariot. Though Rukmi remembered his humiliation by Krishna, he gave her to his nephew to please his sister Rukmini. Rukmini's daughter Charumati married the powerful son of Kritavarma. Later, bound by affection, Rukmi gave his granddaughter Rochana to Aniruddha, his daughter's son, to please his sister, even while knowing the match was improper.

Aniruddha and Rochana were married in the city of Bhojakata, and Rukmini, Balarama, Krishna, Samba, Pradyumna and others went there for the celebration. After the wedding, proud kings led by the King of Kalinga urged Rukmi to beat Balarama at dice, since Balarama did not know the game, though he loved it. Rukmi invited Balarama, and a high-stakes game began. The stakes rose—a hundred, a thousand, then ten thousand. At first, Balarama lost, and the King of Kalinga laughed loudly, showing his white teeth in mockery, which Balarama could not bear. But when a wager of a hundred thousand was set, Balarama won it, and Rukmi himself resorted to deceit, saying, 'I have won.'

Balarama, agitated and furious like the ocean on a full-moon day, his eyes naturally red, raised the wager to a hundred million. He won that too, fairly, but Rukmi resorted to deceit again and said, 'I have won. Let the witnesses here say so.' Then a divine voice echoed from the sky, declaring that Balarama had won the wager fairly and that Rukmi was lying. Ignoring the voice, and driven by the prompting of fate and the encouragement of other arrogant princes, Rukmi began to mock Balarama. He laughed and said, 'You cowherds who wander the forests are not experts in the game of dice. Kings play with dice and with arrows; people like you are not fit for it.'

Insulted by Rukmi and mocked by the kings, Balarama lost his patience. He seized a heavy iron club and struck Rukmi dead right there in the assembly. With incredible speed, he caught the King of Kalinga as he fled, at the tenth step, and knocked out his teeth. Other kings were terrified as Balarama's club shattered their arms and left them bleeding from the head. They fled in horror. When his brother-in-law Rukmi was killed, Krishna did not speak a word of praise or condemnation, fearing to break the affection of either Rukmini or Balarama. Finally, Balarama and the other Dasharhas seated Aniruddha and his bride Rochana on a fine chariot and left Bhojakata for the city of Kushasthali, all their aims fulfilled under Krishna's shelter.
